I have seen these and wondered if I should add it to mine or not so this is very helpful as I have seen very little info on them. What does the other end attach to under the battery? I have no visual of that? ThanksThe fresh air flex duct is part of the air cleaner duct and valve. This was part of the NOX emissions system for '72. Ford had released some service flex ducts after receiving feedback from fleet owners who were spending way too much money replacing the air cleaner duct and valve assembly or the plastic duct under the battery just to get the flex hose. Unfortunately, all are now discontinued. The following are the part numbers and size of the Ford service flex hose.
D3OZ-9A624-B 2 5/16" X 3 11/16" X 11"
D5UZ-9A624-B 2 5/16" X 3 11/16" X 18 1/4"
D7UZ-9A624-A 2 5/16" X 3 11/16" X 25 3/4"
The D3OZ was used mainly for car applications and was discontinued in 1996. The last two numbers are van part numbers (extra length) and were cut to fit. Ford kept those in the parts system a little longer since they were cut to fit and could be made to fit many applications.
The Crown Automotive flex hose dimensions are (2.5" X 3.5") and are very close to the Ford duct size.
Forum member gmadrid found the J-3231980 flex duct offered by Crown Automotive with dimensions very close to the Ford duct and he reported it fit perfectly.
You can check the links and price shop the flex hose and shipping charges. Or, if you have a favorite site, you can check by part number and see what you can find. Good luck with your search.

Though my car is not original, just curious, my build sheet said it came with a California emissions, might you know if that had this piece? Someone previously advised the California exhaust might have been as specifically different as just having just a smog pump on it. Thanks for the information. Very informative. So glad you added the picture because on line many pieces that pop up as options look to be the in dash vent pieces so I'm glad I could compare the difference. The uncapped snorkel never mad sense to me how it capture colder air to the side while still in the engine compartment, but this piece makes its design make sense.Hello Michael,
With the '72s equipped with Nox emissions system and all '73s are now in the 50-year-old range, many of these pieces are missing or damaged. Unfortunately, for owners who want everything correct under the hood or a Concours level show car, the NOS duct and valve (9A626) and plastic fresh air duct (9A624) command insane premium prices. I've seen NOS air cleaner duct and valves sell for over $600.00!
Depending on the car model and engine, some applications had the flex hose attached to the hard plastic duct, others on the air cleaner snorkel.
The illustrations show the duct and valve (9A626) and the hard plastic duct (9A624), the location of the plastic duct that goes under the battery, and the Ford Master Parts (MPC) illustration.
Thanks. The "enclosed" air inlet system would be correct since you have verified that your car was equipped with the NOX emissions option. The option included some additional thermostatically controlled switches and valves and a host of other gizmos that complicated mechanics' lives and caused frustrated owners to pull up the trash can for some underhood cleaning. The engines available in our '71-73s have origins in the '60s, unlike the present-day engines that were engineered and built to be emissions compliant without add-ons and miles of vacuum hose! Wouldn't the engineers that gave us PCV valves and road draft tubes love to see under the hood of an EGR valve-equipped vehicle and '75/ catalytic converters?
There was no difference in the exhaust system for Nox and non-optioned vehicles. The only T/E (Thermactor air pump) on a '71-73 was the '71 429 SCJ. Anyone telling you otherwise is wrong.
And? Did it fit?Thank you all very much. I will look at the jeep option.
Did you find it?Where can I buy the tube that goes from the air cleaner snorkel to the air intake inlet tube? The black part in the picture.View attachment 60732
I did order it and many others. None of them worked. All were not the same diameter. And? Did it fit?
Mine is gone too.
I think someone earlier said they tried it and it didn't fit.Has anyone tried the Bronco air intake? Given it is made for a ford hopefully it would be the same / correct size?
