When I graduated High School some many moons back, there was a guy in school who was really into VW Beetles. He modified a handfull that I remember, one of my favorites, being a dumped in front, nerf-bar-ed, candy orange bug, with a worked-over engine , dual weber carbs, isky cam, dual port heads, and flat white header culminating in a chromed "stinger" pipe. The car had polished Porsche rims and Porsche headlight bezels. It was tough looking. I wouldn't mind owning that car.

I've had a few air-cooled VWs over the years. My long-term project car is a 67 Cal-look T1. Right now I have the body and pan separated while I do the bodywork. Sectioning in a factory metal sunroof. Engine is a 2054 fed by two Weber 44s. These cars are a blast to drive!

My first 6 cars were VW's before falling hard for Mustangs. Wish I still had my "64 panel bus"! I'm constantly amazed at the prices old VW's bring...

This is nearly identical to the one I had....although I had the stainless hubcaps and red hood. It was called The Stuffed Olive. For both the red hood and why it had the red hood.

Very cool. When I was a kid we used to go to the VW Bug-Ins at the Orange County International Raceway. There would be hundreds of VWs of all stripes. And it was at a racetrack so there was drag racing all day. Used to love the engine removal and reinstall competition where they'd pull the engine from a car that runs and drives, remove it and put it back in usually in under 10 minutes with many getting under 5 minutes. To this day, some of the fastest cars I've ever been in were bugs.

Those OCIR Bug-Ins were great!

I do remember the Durachrome Bug, and the Empi "Inch Pincher". OCIR was a great dragstrip, always had a good time there. Back then though, there were so many dragstrips around the Souther California area. I'd have to say that Lions was my favorite, but OCIR, and Irwindale were right up there. As an 18 year old so-cal kid, I was basically interested in fast and sharp looking things, whether they were cars, boats, or girls.

My first trip down the 1320 was at Cordova in a 36hp 1958 Bug. Summer of 1960. Ran against a supercharged 1957 T-bird. He killed it at the line and struggled to get it refired. I was 3/4 of the way down the track when he blew by like I was standing still.
