My Marti Report stats sets my car apart as unique is the California Emissions System. I get this is the niche they do. So I’ve tried to research this for myself and have not found a definitive answer. My question is what this system is and what makes it not the same system sold outside California? Could you buy a new car in California without that system? I’d love some real insight. Thanks

California cars would have a combination of carburetor, distributor and vacuum/emission system calibrations different from the 49-state cars. Some used completely different part #s for the two setups, others like your R code, used the same distributor and carburetor for all 50 states. The difference may be in the vacuum systems, or it may be that all R-codes were California certified.

@kevken1959 has several 72 R-code cars and may be able to help out here.

@rackerm is the parts guru, he can probably tell you exactly what the situation is.

Thanks. You cited two people. In this site, are the “tagged” and will see this or do I need to start a conversation with them directly? Just learning the site. Thanks again.

Hi Michael,

I am more familiar with 73 model year and I have not had a California Emission equipped car, but I can do some digging.

I believe the fuel vapor emissions and vacuum stuff was different on California cars. Do you have the original engine in or out of the car? If so, Does it have either a metal tag under the Coil bracket or a paper tag on the valve cover? If so take pictures and post them. They will look something like the picture below....

A quick glance your engine tag should read some like .... KK622.....C622....
I.D. # CID Carb VIN Code
Engine code 622 351C F-4 R
(or 623 630)

Original Block casting # D2AE-EA (Ford Part # D1ZZ-D) 351C 4 Bolt H.O.

I have some information re: the 1973 engine vacuum calibrations as well as for the fuel evaporative system. All of the information is from the Forel Publications 1973 Mustang Shop Manual, Volume 6, which I have attached to this thread.

If you prefer to get all of the information you need re: 1973 emission calibrations, plus more info for later, the Forel Publications link is:

Unfortunately, I got my mustang without motor or trans. But after researching the 1972 351C I had built to be put in, I have found that cast code of D2AE-CA, is the same as what came on my original motor. Please if you can find anything else about the system with the limited information I have just from the Marti Report it would be greatly appreciated. I’m trying to soak up as much information as possible about my car and all of its details. Thanks.

I believe the California HO engine came with the whole smog pump setup. You can find rebuild pumps from Cardone. Not sure where t o find the rest of the plumbing. Also I believe the crank ventilation PCV was sealed on CA cars.

Do you know where I can find any literature on that? I looked at my catalogs Manuel’s section and didn’t find anything for exhausts. I’ll check out that company. Maybe they do. Thanks

My previous reply made in this thread was made before I have come across a lot of 1967-1972 Vacuum Schematics from The Mustang Barn, free of charge. They assembled a group of PDF files for 1967-192 that seems quite complete, but offered one file per calibration. With their knowledge and approval I assembled all of their schematics, plus a few others I had from different sources, into a single file that is grouped by year and sorted by engine. It is provided here to download and use or distribute (on a no fee basis) as you see fit.

Very handy. Love diagrams. Thanks

Looking through the MPC, I don't see a listing for a Thermactor pump in 1972. Last Mustang application looks to be the 71 429CJ engine. I then moved over to the air cleaner and ducting, there is a listing for 72 351 Special using the cold air ducting, similar to what was used on all 1973 cars, and 72 302/351 w/NOX emissions system.

You can download the 65-72 MPC in sections from the link below. Do some digging and you might turn up some info you're looking for.
