Not only do gear clamps look cheap, they are dangerous. The rubber creeps out from under the clamps, leaving the clamp loose and allowing fluids to leak out. When that fluid is gasoline all kinds of bad things can happen. A good example of this happening is gear clamps on radiator hoses when the weather starts cooling off and antifreeze starts dripping, requiring the clamps to be retightened.
