Under Pressure (Queen & Bowie)

Another one bites the dust (Queen)

One of the best bass lines ever is on Madonna's "Like a Prayer" but it's not the main theme of the song. But it is essential to the groove and the feel of that song.

I'll see if I can remeber more songs. Those two above immediately came to mind.

A handful immediately come to mind for me:

Rush - YYZ

Bon Jovi - Living on a Prayer

Queensryche - Jet City Woman, Della Brown

The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary

David Lee Roth - Knucklebones

Uriah Heep - Stealin'

Whitesnake - Long, Slow & Easy

Extreme - Get the Funk Out

Dream Theater - Metropolis - Part 1

Van Halen - Runaround, Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do, Amsterdam

I'll think of a few more...

Are you kidding me? Listen to the bass in Simply Irresistible by Robert Palmer - now that is a wild bass ride.

Want a fun rhythm with a melody chasing bass - Go with Superstitious by Stevie Wonder. Or kick some octave popping countermelody in Slow Ride by Foghat.

Yes, as mentioned earlier YYZ by Rush is a phenomenal feature of the lower range guitars too. Being a Boston fan and a bass player, I do have significant respect for a lot of bass runs in the Boston arsenal.

Of course one must always bow to the trills and thrills that John Entwistle laid out in My Generation by the Who, and of course the thunderous funk and pop that rumbles in the foundation of Roundabout by Yes. Finally, try to imagine Hotel California without the bass pushing every wanking chord in that song. Oh I could go on......

If you like bass, I wish I knew how to post a song me and some guys recorded in the 90's. I'm pretty proud of my creativity on the bass in that band.

Anything by Covercraft. I like their bass player's keen insight:

"I feel a powerful connection to the history of famous bass players.

Like what's-his-name from The Who.

Or that guy from Led Zeppelin who wasn't Page, Plant or Bonham.

Those are the only two I know for sure."

His skill matches his knowedge.

Wow - i can't believe nobody mentioned Flea. ;)

Red Hot Chili Peppers: Lots of their tunes, but Higher Ground is my favorite

The Wallflowers: One Headlight

Rush: Distant Early Warning, The Camera Eye,

Bon Jovi: Born to be my Baby, Keep the Faith

Buckcherry: Everything, Next 2 You

U2: With or without you, Even better than the real thing

Anthrax: Got the time

Nirvana: Lithium, In Bloom

Golden Earring: Radar Love

The Police: Walking in your footsteps, Murder by Numbers

Pink Floyd: Money, and one of my very favorites - One of These Days

Honorable Mention for a couple of my favorite Pop tunes.

Cake: Short Skirt, Long Jacket

Nena: 99 Luftballoons

Savage Garden: I want you

Baha Men - Who let the Dogs Out and/or Tag Team - Whoomp! There it is! (you can't deny the bass isn't the star... I love how those tunes work out the subs).

Wow, you mention Extreme and most of all Queensryche.

Good taste my friend! ;)
Thanks! I like all sorts of music... and being a low brass player, I can usually pick out the hard-working bass lines. ;) :D

I forgot one of my favorites. I used to also play bass for a while and my favorite song to play was an instrumental by the British band Focus.

The song was "Sylvia". Gear song where the bass almost plays its own song within the the rest.

Check it out, it's worth it.

Talking about bass: one of my favorite bass players, Mike Porcaro of Toto has passed away.

I was lucky to meet him once and he was the nicest person you could imagine.

There are so many great bass lines in rock, jazz and funk. The first one that came to my mind was Good Times by Chic. Written and played by the late great Bernard Edwards. It is one of the most sampled bass lines in music history and it inspired John Deacon's bass line on Another One Bites the Dust.

Yeah! That's a good one. It was also the baseline used on "Rapper's delight" by the Sugarhill Gang".

How could I forget that?

Sir Mix-a-Lot - Baby Got Back

New Order - Confusion (Blade mix)

Crystal Method - There is Hope

Kid Rock - I am the BullGod

Closer to Home by Grand Funk Railroad
Thanks for that! ::goodjob::

I haven't heard that song in a long time.

Reminded me of this classic that I had to listen to after Grand Funk Railroad.
