Hey guys, I've got a dilemma and I was wondering if any of you had the answer. I built a 331 stroker for my 73 and its mated to a toploader. I am running the stock equalizer bar for the clutch. The problem now comes in, I need headers! I wanted to run full lengths but was told that this is not possible. So I'm looking at shorties and I've narrowed it down to two.

Hedmans - 1 1/2" primaries with 2.5" collector

Or

Patriots - 1 5/8" primaries with 3" collector

The Hedmans look like they will fit for sure but the Patriots having bigger primaries and collectors will breathe better. Should I take the chance and get the Patriots or play it safe with the Hedmans?

Here are some pics of the equalizer bar set up.

What are you guys running for headers?

Because of the 331, I'd take a chance on the Patriots and larger primaries and collector. It will build some more power at the top of the band, and some less torque at the bottom of the band.

The summit brand headers have a note that they will not fit 71-73 mustang/cougar with 4 speed?
he has the 351c and you got the 302, completely different routed headers. i would call up patriot header company and ask them the return policy.

i've heard in other forum that the 1.5 primary tube headers are to add low end torque but start lacking up top. if your going to rev her pretty high, then go with larger primaries. if not, the 1.5 will be fine.

They do ? heres what I see on both... cut & paste

"Standard Transmission Floor Shift Yes"

"Standard Transmission Floor Shift Yes"

I run Hedman long tubes on my 351W. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to do the same, especially with a 302 since it'll sit a bit narrower and have more clearance. I believe I am running a modified set of 88650s.

What was the outcome of this? I have the same problem. Nothing seems to fit a 302 in a '73 with a manual transmission past the clutch linkage.

I wrote Holley/Hooker and ask their technical dept. what I should use and I was told that they have nothing that will fit my car! :(

It looks like the Hedman 88400 shorties might fit. Do I need to go with the stock exhaust manifold?

If I can get a 351W with full length headers to fit in a '71, I doubt you'd have any issues with a 302 that's considerably narrower. I used these headers for a while: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hed-88660

I've now upgraded to Accufab Racing's custom headers. They can make whatever you want for a very reasonable sum.

I went with Tri-Y headers on my 302 if that helps. The primary's aren't as big but none of the long tubes fit 302 with a 4-speed that I found. Without custom work or spending an exorbitant amount of money.

In order to fit the Tri-y's I had trim the bell housing some though. Pics in the thread below.

Hi Mdan575,

Thanks for that. Have you got a picture of the headers where they cross the Z-bar and power steering gearbox? I think I have the smaller bell housing (157 tooth flywheel) so I shouldn't have the clearance problem with it. Were the Procomp headers similar to any other brand? I typed in the part number listed in the Ebay listing and nothing comes up. Maybe I screwed up but it looked to be Procomp PC5045SS.

Thanks again for your help.
