the thing that solved the idle problem was that the coil wasnt getting enough voltage at low rpms so what i found out by reading online was that i needed to run a wire from the battery to the coil and it fixed out problem.

Hey welcome Wyatt. So you're 17 then now right? I'm 21 and my first car is also a 1971 mach which I blew some of my college money on. Cool to see more people liking the awesome old muscle cars. It is good that you have help from your dad This is a great forum to get help: I had all my wire harnesses redone through the mail thanks to this site, and my mach runs pretty damn good and reliable now. :p
