Hole in rear end

Any idea why someone would drill a hole in the rear end???

That is a new one. Maybe they didn’t find the fill plug on the 3rd member?

Perhaps a very early (57-59, I think) carrier was used at one time, they didn't have fill plug on the carrier. Do you have a fill plug on the carrier? Chuck

There is a fill hole. The bolt in this hole doesn't even fit tight. Going to weld it shut. Lot's of things on this car makes me scratch my head.

It looks like a poor attempt at a fill hole for easier access than the one on the carrier.

Do you have a vent hole, preferably with a cover? If not, especially if the plug is not tight fitting and located near the top of the housing, it could have been providing venting for then the interior of the axle housing, oil, bearings, and gears, warmed up.

That's great to learn.
I had my right hip replaced in Sept 2018, It's been great and I ride a road bicycle more miles than I put on my Mustang each year. Exercise is the key to a healthy outcome.

more than likely to fill the rear end, some earlier cases didn't have fill plugs and the fill hole was in the housing. That isn't even a plug it looks more like a ring gear or flywheel bolt. make sure your carrier has a fill plug before welding this or you won't be able to add oil.

It's just a bolt. A fairly long one at that. It does have a fill hole. I plan on breaking it all down and checking everything. That's when I will weld it shut.

Interesting. I bet that's what it is. It was definitely set up as a go fast at some point.
