Is there any type of seal I am missing?

Area in question is where the top of the fender, either side meets the door edge, near the windshield.  The other day I had a small spray bottle I was using, put it near that area on the passenger side.  It rolled into the fender, had to fish it out with the passenger door wide open, had some sticky tape on a stick that I was able to latch on to it and pull it thru that area near the door hinge.  when I first got my car I found a roll of painters tape on the driver side, inside fender in the same area, used a coat hanger to snatch it out, same way, near the door hinge.   Is that area normally so wide open or am I missing some sort of seal?  did not see anything in my body book.  This is a picture of the driver side area, hood is not fully closed .

On 1971 only there was a plastic piece there and you could get an anodized aluminum trim on the outside and also across the hood in rear.
