Well, one of them is life size!

I'll start with Japan.

I'd been keeping my eye out for anything 7123 to fuel my own habit and maybe find something interesting for Mark and his Japanese Export thread. My first encounter was quite by accident. I'd picked up a hire car in Nagano and was heading back to Nozawa Onsen when I spotted a 'strawberry's for sale' sign pointing down a rural track. Knowing the girls would probably reward me in some way if I returned with a car AND strawberrys, I headed down the narrow track. About 5 minutes down I spotted what appeared to be one of these secret fabled 'Muscle Car Graveyard' so I diverted across a field and pulled up next to a sad rusted out vette. Here is some footage:

[video=youtube]

I spent about 1/2 an hour crawling over this 3F05H and took about a hundred photos. Unfortunately no data tag or buck but the most rust I've ever seen!

My second and third encounter ended with a purchase. I couldn't interest the girls in coming to the otaku paradise in Nakano so instead left them in Harajuku to torture my visa card. Whilst walking the narrow aisles of Nakano mall marvelling at all the vintage tin toys, enamel signs, anime, manga, Tomica cars and Japanese soft porn I happened across this Otaki 71 Mach 1.

Otaki mach 1.jpg

The packaging was not perfect but I bit the bullet and for and extra $20 had them ship it to me.

Then I stumbled on this beauty.

Doyusha Mach 1.jpg

A Doyusha 71 Mach 1, packaging was A1. I bit the bullet again.

So, we arrived back in Perth late Sunday night and I thought I'd do my regular scour of eBay and gumtree (our local craiglist) and I happened upon a 1F05M incorrectly listed as a 1970 Mach 1 in Brisbane, the other side of Australia to me. It looked clean with low mileage so I ordered a 'rush' Marti and emailed a mate in Brisbane that does vehicle inspections. There were a couple of eBayers with low feedback wrestling back and forth, $100 at a time but really no interest. I suppose if you were looking for a 1970 Mach 1 you would likely skip straight past this listing and if you were looking for a 71 Mach 1 351C4V your search parameters would have missed this one. I typed in my maximum price with a minute to go and snagged it for $10K less.

I'll post more pics when it arrives next week!

Cheers...

Mickus,

You are the man! I can't wait to see the pics of the car!

Nice job on the models. Gives me something to look for when I head there in April!

Nice score on the Mach 1! Being black makes it even better! Post some details when you pick it up!

Wow! Way to go.

Leaving your girls to torture your Visa card? You're more of a man than I'll ever be. :)

Congrats! ::thumb::

The Otaki R/C is very rare indeed - if you can even find them online, they're going for well over $500USD with the box in much worse shape than that.

I have the 'Vanishing Mach 1' version of that Doyusha kit (which has both 1/12th & 1/24th cars in one box) - the kit looks like it'll be a total blast to build... VERY detailed and pretty much everything [except for some of the decals] is correct.

Can't wait to see more of the full scale one as well.

Nice haul!!

Hey Mark; I've just started uploading photos, I'll post a Dropbox link for you, and anyone else interested, shortly. Would love to catch up and chew the fat. I'm in Perth, if you're heading over let me know. Can share some great spots for you to haunt in Japan too, been going there for a few years now. The pow is the best in the world, imo.

Hey Eric; couldn't believe it when I spotted the Otaki. I remember not being able to contain myself and laughing out loud (which is very indiscreet in Japan) when I saw it. Don't know when I'll get around to building these, probably won't be until the family have me sitting in a chair in the corner with a blanket over my lap :)

Well done Mickus

Will look forward to your report and some pics

A lesson to everybody to extend your search parameters when on the hunt

Pity the Jap car was not too flash
Hey Mick; that Mach 1 in Japan was a mess dude. When I lifted the hood (with the owners permission of course) to check out the engine bay and take some snaps, the underside lip crumbled under the pressure of my fingertips and you know that sound when you open a bag of potato chips and slowly squeeze the bag crushing the contents? Well, that's the sound the hood and the hinges and the springs made as I lifted the hood. I don't know how that car was still standing. The chassis and frame rails were completely rusted out, another 10 years and they'll be nothing left. All the plastic looked great! I contemplated lifting the cowl vents covers but decided against it. Didn't want any bad 'carma'. lollerz

From the before shots I've seen of Eric's, this one made his look pristine!

Mickus,

Were you able to figure out what the current owners plans are for the car? I'm really surprised how rusty these cars appear to be. I guess it's the salt air or something.

Can't wait for the pictures. If you can pass on the full vin that would be appreciated as well so I can order a Marti report.

I think I'll be the same boat - I'm having a tough go of it just trying to make time for the full-size toys... let alone the small scale ones. ;)

Wow - that's pretty bad, indeed.  Nice to know I've been established as something of a benchmark - I think.  rofl

Hi Mickus,

Well congratulations on your new purchase. What a find for yourself!  Looks like you've come down with a dose of Mustang fever! :p :p

She looks very sharp and sexy in black. ;)  I do hope when you get her in your stable, you don't find too many issues with the car.

It would be great to hear your feedback with some pics maybe when you get a chance, and tell us all about it.

To be honest, i keep my ear to the ground for 1,2,3 Mustangs around Oz , and that one slipped past my radar well and truly - and in Brisbane to boot! As you say - advertised as a '70 has taken

it off the radar for 1,2,3 buyers. So, good catch mate!, and i hope she turns out to be a beauty and ready for you to enjoy. ::thumb::

Greg. :)
