1973 Ford Mustang Mach 1 T5 Q-Code 4-Speed
Hi Richie,

that's cool! I have a T5, too, a 1973 Mach 1. Are you German or Military Service in Germany or what's the story behind you and the car? Would love to hear more of you and the car, pictures are also welcome. And, oh, welcome to the forum 😊

5 may 2022 I will Have owned My 72 mach 1,T-5 for 50 years.
I was In the ARMY and Station in Germany. One day as I drove through the town where I was, station I notes the big blue Ford sheal, so I drove into the fords lot when the salesman came up to me, I ask If I could order a 1972 Ford Mustang. This was Oct.1971. The salesman took me into his office then he called the Ford manufactory in Koblenz Germany and ask them if American Military person could order a 1972 Mustang Mach 1 through them. When he got off the phone, he informed me give him my duty phone # and he would call whenever he found out. 45Days later the salesman called and said yes, I could and for me to come by and place my order. When I placed the order, I told the salesman I wanted this mustang Powerful and when it hit the autobahn, I wanted all Germans to take notices. On 5 May 1972 I went to Koblenz Ford Factory to pick up my mustang. At the factory I was asked what type of oil I wanted to run in the motor for the engine had already been broke in on a dyno. I was given the papers from the dyno showing the motor put out 315 HP. I started asking question then. What type of engine this mustang has? He Said This car is not a mustang it's a T-5 Mach 1. The engine is a Ford Panterra HO 351C CJ 4V Q coded Ram Air
Factory 780 Holly carb with a Panterra C-6 auto trans and a 9-inch rear with 2:50 gears. on the odometer was only in metric 340 k's. The head lights were altogether different. When I ship it back to America when my tour was over, I had to replace the odometer to mph. the head lights had to be replaced to seal beans and the windshield had to be replace with safety glass. oh yes, the suspension system it came with was, The European Trans Am suspension which was Supered. While in Germany I ran 2 pounds of air in each tire the rest was Helium and no weights on the wheels, they were perfectly balance. Now you know the story behind This T-5. As Soon as I can I'll post some pictures I have pliantly of them.

I have 2 1972 Mach 1's
Where in NC are you located? I have 2-1972’s. One running and driving while one awaits restoration. The guy I got the latter from in Greensboro purchased all the parts I needed from Ford before they were obsolete. Therefore, I have the potential for a super nice car.

I was in Statesville yesterday. I do consulting for ISS and used to ride horses in Love Valley which must be real close to you. A nice car and story, by the way.

Very cool story and very cool car to go with it. Congratulations on having the determination to order it back in 71 and keep it all these years. Definitely a unique build. You should get the Marti Report on it to see the breakdown on the number of similarly equipped exports. Welcome to the forum and it would be great to see some pictures. If you are interested and feel the car is show worthy that would be a great one to bring to Ponies in the Smokies in Sevierville, TN or some of the Mustang Club of America shows. There is one in Florence, SC at the end of March 2022.

Most military people station in Germany if they chose to buy a new American car They would go to their Post exchange (PX) and order what ever Make and model car they wanted wheather it was Ford Chevy ,Dodge etc. I not sure if a German made could be bough through the PX. By Buying the car through the PX ,The price would be cheeper than buying it through a dealer back in America. However I was not going to trust the PX in buying another car.(Reason Why) 90 days before I departed Viet Nam I had ordered a 1971 Mustang Boss 429,4 speed through the PX there in Da Nang Viet Nam. The Mustang was suppose to have been at Ravis Ford Dealers In Statesville, N.C. when I arrived from V.N. but it wasn't it was lost. when The Mustang was found It was to late I was on my way to Ft.Dix NJ. heading for Germany. ( The Boss Mustang was found In Columbus Ga. there at Ft. Benning. The Boss 429 through the Px was $ 4,000 to $ 5,000 ??? a Mach 1 was around to $ 3,000. to $ 4,000. Hear in America the 72 Mustang would have coast my. around $ 3,800 give or take a few hundred. So when I was in Germany I elected to buy my mustang through the civilian dealers rather than through the PX, even though the car coast my twice as much. By going through the German dealer I had to pay $ 8. 500 dollars for it, but I would like to think I got a much better and sturdier car. I was station In Germany for 10 years In the city Of Kaiserslautern.

That is so cool. I wish I would have thought about ordering my 1972 Mach1 when I was in PACAF, but as a young Airman I wasn't thinking about the cars. I do have two 1972s now, one is a Q Model and the other is an H. Welcome to the forum as well.

I know exactly where you are. The store was a “must stop” for snacks and supplies before heading off on the trails. Thanks for the invite.

Chuck,

yes, it's still there and it's still an important Ford dealer in the country but offers a lot more than Ford now like Mazda, Jaguar, Land Rover, Opel, Mitsubishi and Volvo. We bought a used Skoda Octavia a few years ago, it was ok.
