A friend wants to protect his steel bumpers from weather and mild

abuse. What is better for that pupose? Paint or powder coat.

Thanks.

Hi Mike,

What is the finish on the bars at the moment? - chrome, already painted?

That plays a part in the equaision.

Powder coating is a durable finish, but,

I myself prefer an industrial 2 PACK POLYURETHANE FINISH because your chasing maximum abrasion/chip/scratch/chemical/impact resistance as possible on something like bars. That paint is incredibly hard and strong for a finish.

You can order it in various custom colors as well.

I have had some dash parts powder coated and they have held up well. also coated parts on our land speed car and the stuf has a high restance to chemicals and scratching.[/i]

Originally powder coat with signs of corrosion.

I can't make an honest comparison between powder coating and paint because I've never painted, or had painted, any parts on my cars. I have however, had several components from various vehicles powder coated over the years and I can say they've all held up very well. I had the rims and hubs of my Harley powder coated over 10 years ago and they still look brand new.

Refinish in 2 PACK POLYURETHANE.

OK, Basic guideline for a good quality finish, remove all powdercoat with machine or sand blast. (no chrome left on steel).

Prepwash/ Prepsol or Lacquer thinner(no gunwash thinner) wash steel straight away.

If surface rusting occures, machine sand again or treat with Deoxidine to remove all surface rust.

To avoid surface rust occuring, move straight in and Apply 2 Pack Epoxy Primer to a dry film build of 50 microns.

Finish with 2 Pak Polyurethane color.

For tech info like drying times/cure times/flash off times/ sanding paper grades /gun types and setups/gun clean up/ spraying temps/baking temps and baking times/number of coats/ cut & polish info, etc, refer to the paint manufacturers product tech info sheets. Source out American or local Country of origin paint companies for choice of brand paint products. Ordering in Metallics could be a problem as well, solids ,no.

TIPS. - Denib, cut and polish before full cure of Poly takes place, as it is very hard to do so once fully cured. And this paint is best left for the paint shop pro to apply, not the back yard, DIY guy.

BTW, stripping back to bare metal and refinishing with new powdercoat or a 2Pak urethane system, would give good durable finishes., but i think the poly would give the strongest durable finish for that specific application.

Hope that helps,

Hands down powder coat is stronger than paint. I had my sand rail done back in 1994 and it has over a 140 trips to the desert on it. It's been in many sand storms and hit by rocks and still looks decent. I have friends that painted their rails and in 3 years they look like crap. Well worth the money.

Powder Coating hands down as far as I am concerned. In every case I have ever dealt with my powder coated parts have long outlasted the painted parts. For resistance to corrosion and chipping/flaking. Motorcycle rims, car parts, odd jobs all turned out great.

But that is all based on the powder coater. Proper prep work like all painting makes the difference between a long durable job and a job that will start flaking off shortly after.

One thing I am curious about that maybe the others with more experience may be able to comment on and that is cost. I was pleasantly surprised at the relatively low cost the shop here in my area charged for powder coating the various pieces I've brought to them over the years. Those rims and hubs I brought to them 10 years ago...cost me $80 US total. That included any blasting and other prep work. Yesterday, I dropped off the shock tower braces that Mike sent me, to be blasted and powder coated. Total cost $40 US. That seems pretty reasonable for having your parts come back to you looking nearly brand new and having a very durable finish on them.

Can anyone else comment on the difference in cost if those same parts would have been taken to an auto body/ paint shop to be painted ?

Same here as long as it can be done local powder has always been dirt cheap. My motorcycle rims cost $120 for both to be coated. That included prep work and they look awesome still today. Its shipping that can quickly shoot up the price.

What paint would that be exactly Sir?

Various kinds of paints over the years. My father has done autobody painting on the side as far back as I can remember. So assisting in the garage was a normal thing. We painted my Mustang back in the 80's with IMRON if that gives you an idea. Kinda wish I understood how toxic the crap was years ago. Body suite be damned.........

But even then I am still a bigger fan of powder coating most parts including wheels. I have personally had alot better luck with long term corrosion resistance. But I have also had real good coaters who new how to do it right the first time.
