Ram air question

I just put on an NPD ram air setup, followed the directions in an old mustang monthly magazine, everything looks the same as what they did.

when I compare it to a pic of a factory ram air setup from a1972 mustang test in an old magazine, which showed an engine pic, it isn't the same.

I was under the impression this was a factory correct replacement.

is it really just a functional replacement but not meant to be a factory correct replacement?

Its hard to help without a more detailed description, or better yet some pictures.  Can you post a picture of yours.

NPD is pretty good about describing concours parts in their catalogs.  If they don't mention it, the part is most likely a functional reproduction, not a "factory original" part.  There are a lot of reasons for this.  First, anything that had a Ford or Ford owned logo on it (think Ford, FoMoCo, Autolite, Motorcraft, etc.) cannot be reproduced and sold without Ford licensing approval.  This approval process is expensive, and Ford takes a not small cut of your sales prices.  Another reason is that some parts have applications across brands, so from a producer standpoint it's cost effective to make an unbranded functional equivalent that can be sold into multiple applications.  Think Rock Auto. 

That said, some photos of the areas of concern would help us figure out the issue.

I'm not sure what improvement it provides. ....and I know I'm probably doing a moon  :help: at the minister in church on a Sunday saying this... but performance wise, I've had both ... it seems like a lot of effort for what feels like status or 1% increase in advantage to the carb...to me it was over complication with more drawbacks than benefit.

First pic is of mine (and mustang monthly) install, second pic is 1972 factory. Notice how on mine the ram air seal sits way up on the housing and on the factory one it sits almost even withe the top lip of the housing.

I'm interested in this as I plan on adding the system to my car as well. Regarding the seal, I've read in other posts that the seal comes inside out and needs to be flipped when installing? Maybe that is what is going on here?

It looks like the seal isn't installed correctly in the B&W photo, look at the front of the filter housing relative to the AC hose bracket.

Yeah - the aftermarket seals are inside out.  Once you fix that they fit well.

I have a 73 Vert with a 351C 2v (h-code) with a factory ram air and an aftermarket rubber seal. Also two Ram Air Diagrams. For 1973 Ram Air, I have seen conflicting information about the presence of the fresh air duct on ram air cars  sold outside the state of California. 1972 and 73 ram air cars sold in California cars did have the fresh air duct.

There are cosmetic differences, so the aftermarket ram air kit is not concourse correct. I know that the big one is the air cleaner cover which is completely different, and there are differences in a bunch of other smaller areas. No one but a hardcore 71-73 Mustang nut would ever know the difference, so don't worry too much about it.

Tahiti, Moorea, Taha'a and Raiatea. Paradise without Mustangs......
