Hello,

Have a 1973 Convertible with C6 auto and 351C. Has a very old set of non original shocks in it. Need to replace them ... anyone have suggestions as to a good set of replacement shocks ? Open to suggestions, probably want to install a simple set of good shocks, OEM type but ones that would help with better handling characteristics. Also, since this car is 41 years old should I assume that the spring are shot or can I retain them ? Any tests or symptons that I should look for ? Thanks

I went with KYBs Gas-A-Just front and rear.

Chuck's right - the springs are probably good. Any kind of clunking or extra bouncing is typically from the worn out shocks, bushings, and related mounting hardware. Some of that, however, could be realized because of worn out spring bushings as well.

Keep in mind that shocks are for dampening the suspension travel - not actually providing any extra ride-height (unless you're using air shocks, that is). If your car is suffering from rear-end sag or droop, then you might consider new springs... but most likely, new shocks and related mounting hardware will probably fill the bill. Always start out with the simple things first.

As stated above, you can't go wrong with KYB. Great value for money and they improve handling considerably. I have the second set of KYBs in my car and they last pretty long. My first set lasted 130000 kms (a little over 80000 miles).

I just ordered a set of the Doestch Tech adjustable oil shocks today. Though I would give them a whirl since I hadn't seen alot of reviews on them.

FYI I went with your recommendation and bought a set of the Gas Adjust shocks. Had them installed along with all new front end components. Big improvement ... the shocks are reasonably priced and made a big difference in the ride ... thanks again for the info !
