tire size question

i have a set of 195/70/14 tires i recently bought for the car i am currently driving, and i want to put them on my mustang. i am planning on keeping my

14's for awhile, but i also wanted an opinion whether or not this specific tire size would look at least decent on these big ponies. anyone have any thoughts?

Quite a bit on the small side.

Case in point, the tires shown here are P205/70/R14's (what I found on the car when I got it), and are about as small as I'd run on on stock (for a Mach 1) 14x7" rims. They're not large enough in diameter for my liking either; P215/70/R14's would be more suitable.

195's will not only be squatter than what you see here, but narrower. Barely enough for the basic 14x6" rim. P205/70/R14's are the smallest I'd run in a "free tire" situation such as you describe.

Ford actually took into consideration engine sizes when determining tire sizes. Attached is a scan of factory tire size information from December, 1970 regarding 1971 Mustangs.

Have a look at my car. It has 14" rims, but I have P225x70R14. My tires are about 1.7" taller and 2.9" wider. I'm not sure 1.7" would make that much of a difference.

I don't recommend it. Mine has 14x6 rims with 195/70-R14s... and they are too small for the car, IMHO.

Another thing you need to consider: not all 14" rims from the time period will clear power disc brakes. I tried to put the 14" rims from my buddy's '63.5 Galaxie 500 XL on mine, and they hit the outer parts of the calipers. Obviously, the ones on my car fit, so they'll get cleaned up and used as full-size spares - for both of our cars.

The closest equivalent to the E78-14 is the 195/75R14.

My '71 Grande came with E70-14 belted tires as an option.

Currently have P235/60 R14 BFG Radial T/A. With the stock

hubcaps they give the care a toned down stance.

thanks guys, I am actually going to run them on my mustang until i complete the car. the mustang right now has 14's but the tires on that are oin them 165/14's which are fugly lol. but i also work at a tire shop full time so if i dont like them i can always get another set. i was looking at 225/70/14 tires which we can only get in a generic tire such as a grand am (multi-mile) or a good ride (also a multi-mile) which both are made by michellin tire. and also i have 4 wheel drums so i wouldnt have to worry with clearance as much. but thanks for the info guys!
