Trick to Removing HVAC Knobs?

Ok - so what's the trick to removing the small chromed plastic knobs from the HVAC levers?  I don't see any metal tabs or spring releases and there doesn't seem to be any glue residue anywhere, but those things have a GRIP!

tiny flathead screwdriver or something like a dental pick with an angle end to get in  to move the spring steel inside of it to release pressure on the shaft, look at the back of the knob where the shaft enters.
