16 gauge, wire 175, black with yellow dashes, mercury switch activated. From 1971-72 electrical assembly manual.

Chuck got it right, above. This is from a 1972 schematic, where a fuse is shown to be protecting the circuit used for the underhood light. 1973 sees a change in that sub-circuit.

#Even though your Mustang is a 192 model, I thought I would show the schematic for a 1973 Mustang. I do this for several reasons. First, because 1973 saw some subtle changes that affect the underhood light subsystem. Second, Chuck had mentioned Circuit #175 in conjunction with the wire color being Black with Yellow Dashes. Although Chuck is correct, the 1972 schematic shows a black wire feeding the 7.5 amp fuse and mercury switch for the underhood light sub-system. The 1973 schematic shows the wiring feeding the mercury witch to be the Black Yellow Hash wire, and there is no 7.5 amp fuse. Rather, a Circuit Breaker for the Start Relay protects Circuit 175.

Although it is not likely the 1973 wiring was introduced into 1972 Mustangs, given some of the information Chuck provided I thought I ought to show what the 1973 Circuit 175 with underhood lighting looked like just in case there might be a difference between the 1972 schematic and what the vehicle actually has for its wiring.
