My Car
1972 mustang base with 302
Dont hate me but I have a 1972 Mustang Base with the 302 its running fine but the engine definetly needs rebuilt or replaced soon, Im more than happy to rebuild that but money is tight right now and I technically have a 383 Stroker SBC already completed sitting in the garage. Does anyone know if their are engine mounts available to install it into that year of mustang or would it have to be custom?

For the amount of money you'll spend making everything else connect to the car - motor mounts, exhaust, electrical, transmission, shifter linkage, new driveshaft, it would be cheaper to rebuild the 302 than to try and stuff a chevy motor in it.

well I need to replace Trans soon too as well as a large portion of other parts only thing that I dont really need to replace is exhaust

Stroke your 302 to 347 and customize your components and put throttle body EFI in it and you’ll be much satisfied with the results and have Smokin performance without the blasphemy!

Motor mounts would have to be custom. You'll also need a front sump pan and pickup (like for a first-gen Chevy II). The aftermarket rear sump "J" pan for them "may" or may not work.

Obviously, it's your car and you're free to do as you choose, but why not just sell the mustang and find a GM product for your engine or vise-versa? I'm anti-brand swapping muscle cars.

Money is tight?? Likely you should not be considering any sort of engine swapping.

Alright if I do a stroker setup will the stock transmission be adequate and in regards to the efi wouldn’t I need a new fuel sending unit from the tank?

It depends on how wild you go. I have a 351W in one car, which is essentially a stroked 302 from the factory. Mine is just a basic stock-style build. No fancy upgraded racecar internals, but I do have all the external bolt-on upgrades like intake, exhaust, 4 barrel carb, underdrive pulleys. Thats maybe low 300HP numbers. The transmission is a C4 with a shift kit. It has survived back there for many moons, ever since I was a college kid and a pizza delivery guy.

It is entirely possible to build a 302 to much higher power numbers than mine, with or without stroking it.

Just looking for enough power to cruise comfortably but also still be able to get up and go when it needs to

That whole sentence is subjective. For like 30 years, ford put the 302 into its performance model cars. And thats just a bone stock 302. I only takes like 17HP to keep a car cruising at 70MPH, which I would consider "cruising comfortably".

If you spend a few grand on internals, you can pep the 302 up north of 450hp.
Here's a 289, running the factory carb, factory heads, factory crank, factory block making 475-500HP, doing wheelies.

Or you could simply drop in a 351C that will bolt directly to your motor mounts. A C4 that's been gone through with quality parts and a street/strip shift kit will live well in that application. Ford put 351Cs in lots of cars in the early 70's so it shouldn't be too hard to find one.

The exhaust and all the accessory brackets would need to be swapped. OP said he's on a tight budget. Swapping to a cleveland motor won't be cheap.

I respectfully disagree. My best friend dropped an H code 351 into a '68 convertible that had a 302 in it from the factory. The motor mounts bolted right up. You would need a passenger side exhaust manifold for a Cleveland, but the 2V manifolds aren't very hard to find. I think I have a couple in my garage. A decent exhaust shop can make up pipes to connect to the existing pipes for little $. If you are looking for low dollar just hook up the alternator alone, but the '71 Torino PS pump went right in too. He even used the kickdown rod from the doner car. We had it going complete on a Saturday and Sunday. He drove it to work on Monday morning.

You’ll need a new electric fuel pump. Aeromotive sells them for 71-73 Stangs or they also sell a new fuel tank with the pump already installed. The sending unit is integral to the pump. You’ll also need a fuel return line along with the recommended filtration. It’s not hard to do but somewhat time consuming. I would also recommend that you replace the distributor with the Holley/MSD dual sync distributor. It will shake hands with the Sniper and the comm with the sniper will auto adjust once the initial adjustments have been made.
