    Identifying Differential

Whats the potential damage if I don't swap to a stronger differential and all the extras that requires right away? If I'm not too hard on it, should it hold up, or am I sitting on a ticking time bomb?

This is probably a dumb question, but if I get a new 9" differential, and with that new axles, I'm guessing that I will also have to get new wheel hubs (or the new axle will have it attached) and I will need new wheels, tires (tyres for you wierdies out there), and drum brakes (unless I upgrade...

Thanks. I just saw another video that had an early 8" and it looks exactly like mine. I guess the next question is, is there any concern that the 8" won't hold up to the 429/460 power output or should it be ok?

It does drink gas about like I drink beer lol, somewhere between 8 and 14 mpg, leaning closer to the 8.

Honestly, that would be to smart for me to take them out and just look at the part number.... Lol I guess part of the idea was to know what to buy before I took it apart because I'm afraid of getting it too far apart where I can't even get it properly towed if need be. Is there a part number on...

No dice on the tag. I don't have a deepwell socket but it looked like one would fit if I tried it. The whole underside of the vehicle was painted black (yeah I know its a cardinal sin to buy one thats been painted like that to hide rust, but the rust looked/looks quite minor. Couldn't get a good...

Came with a code 6, but who knows whats in it. Fingers crossed that the stamp is still with it somewhere. Um, when I had it on stands the other day if I moved one wheel the other would turn too, but then it stopped after a little while and just the 1 wheel would turn.

Thanks for more info. For those asking its a 1971 Mach 1, didn't really think it would matter what the car was since I gave the original Engine, Transmission and Differential codes from the factory listed next to the VIN that I looked up with this handy link...

    Identifying Differential

Thanks for the links guys. Yeah this thing doesn't match the descriptions of the standard ford 8 and 9 inch rear axles, so unless its some special production run, idk what the previous owner put in. I'll try an see if there's a tag or something on it. I wonder if perhaps its from the same...

    Identifying Differential

Hey all, I have a leaky axle seal at the passenger side rear axle flange so I want to replace it, but I want to make sure I get the right ones. I looked online and autorestomod made a video on identifying 9inch and 8inch diffs  but mine doesn't fit the description or the example they have on...

    Recommended Performance Motor Swap

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! Yeah I just turned 25 and this has been my dream car since I was 15, got pretty lucky in that regard to being able to own my dream car so young. Don't get me wrong the vehicle is perfectly drivable and I am enjoying it! I just want to make it just about as...

    Recommended Performance Motor Swap

It's not the original motor with the car as it came off the line with a 351. I spent a good amount of time trying to find the serial number yesterday so I could look it up, but I'm not sure where it is located. I agree it is weak at idle at the very least. There's a number of things that I...

I really like the idea of doing that if the block is still solid! Thanks!

Man that would be awesome to put in! Worth more than the car itself though. Honestly might consider it in a few years lol

I would agree with them that it doesn't seem to be strong especially during idle. I do need to do a leakdown test for sure. Probably should check the spark plugs and distributor first too. I think "tired" was the actual terminology they used. I don't think this shop offers engine swaps so they...
