Just a note for anyone who is doing the MDL T5 swap - The modern driveline T5 crossmember used the other hole, and mine was plugged up with some dirt so I didn't even see it. I was afraid the cross member wasn't going to fit until I used a punch to clean out the closer hole.
Linkage matched - it was from a 72 cougar, so close cousin. :D Everything is mostly back together before I ran out of energy and daylight. I did mess up one of the trans cooler lines, so I either need to order another set or break out the tube bender. I may do a temp fix to get it back on the...
In a strange twist of fate (and guided by my impatience to wait for parts) I found a gentleman selling a FMX that had been rebuilt for a great price. I picked it up today, drove home, and started working to take out the old one. I'm down to the last steps of removing it before I quit for the...
Yeah... gears are on my list too, but it is a slippery slope. If I'm spending the cash to regear, then I should probably find a 9" to put them in, and if I'm replacing the axle then it's probably a good time to move from drums to discs and then ....
I've done this dance before when I bought my...
After quite a few discussions with various transmissions shops near me, I have come to realize there is only one (so far) who will rebuild a FMX, and they are almost 2 months out. Seeing the cost to rebuild the FMX is within 2k of the quote for the T5 setup from MDL, I am somewhat certain I'll...
After getting the engine running decent, I decided to drive the 71 into town for ID/OD inspection. (Just picked the old gal up last month after previous owner had it since 1989, and he only put 2k miles on it since 91) I noticed the transmission wasn't real sharp at shifts, so I picked up some F...
For those playing at home, here is.... "the rest of the story".
Replaced antifreeze, thermostat, and radiator cap.
I got the head gasket leak test kit and it didn't show anything. Stayed the same color, no yellow.
Replaced distributor cap and rotor.
Didn't have a compression tester handy...
Thanks for all the troubleshooting ideas folks. I had family stuff today and didn't make it back to storage to look at it, but that is on my to-do for tomorrow morning. My thoughts
Remove rad cap and look for bubbles - that seems like the first and easiest place to go other than the fact that I...
Think I figured out what I am missing for when I can get back to the car. The big philips 4 was the pivot for the arm, the 1/2" head was the slide for the slot at the left, and the think that I suspect is still in there is that hole just up from the hook assembly. I don't remember seeing any...
Good evening all,
1971 H code convertible w 351C 2v and FMX.
As a bit of background, I found this car a few weeks ago and the previous owner had it since 1989. During the time he owned it, it was driven less than 2500 miles, most of which was prior to 1992. So... when I got it it hadn't moved...
OK... following back up here. I got close on this, but didn't quite get the old one off yet. As shown in the link there is the big pozidrive screw (I used a #4 phillips with an impact and it worked like a charm, but I really struggled trying to use a screw driver before that) and two 1/2 inch...
Perfect. I found your response to someone else but never found the photos, so this kind of confirms what I am looking at. I am leaning towards trying to replace the same way you did. I have to get the hoses replaced first, but that is first on my list tomorrow. Both of the rear quarter window...
Good evening all,
I've started trying to clean up a few of the gremlins that I found when I got the 71, so I'll start with getting the convertible top fully functional.
Initial problem - pump ran but top didn't move up. Found it was dry. Filled with tranny fluid. Hit button and it went up...
