    FMX Down for the Count

Great information, Eric! Thanks for all the details. Very helpful. I'll be sure to check out the pics and link. As far as cost is concerned, I guess I was thinking an apples-to-apples swap, meaning a rebuilt AOD vs a rebuilt FMX, as opposed to comparing a used AOD vs the rebuilt FMX. In any...

    FMX Down for the Count

So, while I'm researching an AOD conversion, I got some quotes on an FMX rebuild. One shop quoted $1500, and another quoted $1200. Those include pulling and reinstalling the transmission. If I pull and install the trans I can probably save a couple hundred. Prices too high? I'm guessing I...

    FMX Down for the Count

Thanks for the input. Since the transmission has to come out either way, I'll have it looked at to get a repair estimate. Would be nice to keep it original if it can be rebuilt and is not too expensive, compared to a swap.

    FMX Down for the Count

I believe the FMX transmission in my 71 is on its last leg. Whining, grinding noise that comes and goes in Park or Neutral. Put it in Reverse or Drive and it doesn't move right away. Slips in and out of gear while braked at the stop light. Surges and causes the engine speed to bounce when...

    Front Valance Trouble

Wow! Thanks, Don! No wonder I was having trouble. Would not have figured that out on my own.

    Front Valance Trouble

Here's a pic of the mount points on the car. Notice the speed nuts on the bottom of the hood latch braces, and the 2 L-brackets outside of those. The center mount bracket is missing. Both those L-brackets are exactly the same and are slotted for adjustment. If they're custom, somebody spent...

    Front Valance Trouble

Sorry. I didn't quite understand what you were trying to say earlier. Still confused. The valance has 11 mount holes. 3 mount points on each end attach to the fenders. There are 5 mount points across the valance. The 1 in the center must mount to a bracket (which I think my car is...

    Front Valance Trouble

Thanks! Guess I have some fabrication work to do. So much for getting it out on the road this week.

    Front Valance Trouble

The pics of the underside are 1 each of left and right of center. The center bolt is not in either picture.

    Front Valance Trouble

Well, having trouble figuring how to get more than 1 pic in the same post. Will have to go this route.

    Front Valance Trouble

Yeah, not sure what happened to those pics. Must be user error. :) But, you're right ... I measured the bolt holes on the valance and compared to the spacing on the fender. Some aren't even close. 1/2 inch or more difference. So, did you modify the holes in your valance to get it to fit?

Here are some pics. Hope they're good enough to show what's happening. IMG_0005.pdf

    Front Valance Trouble

Has anyone had any trouble getting the front valance to align correctly at all the mount points? Reassembling the front end ... door and body lines/gaps look pretty good, grill is on, bumper is on, hood lines up well. I needed a new front valance. I loosely installed it with the center bolts...

    Factory Guage Test

Great news! Engine break-in went well today, and all the gauges worked! The tach even worked (thanks Midlife!). A minor problem with a leaking valve cover gasket, and took awhile to get the timing/idle correct. Overall, a very successful day! :D

    Factory Guage Test

Thanks. Yeah, if I couldn't determine that the factory gauges were working, my plan B was to go buy a set of aftermarket gauges. Now that I know the factory gauges respond to current, and assuming my new sending units are good, I'm comfortable firing the motor with the factory gauges. Should...
