    Factory Guage Test

Thanks for the advice and help! I'll be adding a grounding wire next.

    Factory Guage Test

Good call! I connected a C battery, as you suggested, and got both the oil and temp needles to move. They did not peg immediately. They actually moved very slowly, as I held the connection for a few seconds. Maybe that's the difference between the normal 5V from the regulator and only 1.5V...

    Factory Guage Test

When I did the ground test, the key was in the on position. I removed the sending wire from the unit and inserted a grounding wire into the plug. The battery is currently grounded to the front of the block. I have seen comments about a separate ground wire from the block to the chassis. I...

    Factory Guage Test

Hi All, trying to test that the factory oil and temp center gauges are functional on my 71 before firing and breaking in the rebuilt engine. Fuel gauge is working. Center cluster lights are working. I read about 5V from the regulator to the oil & temp gauges, and 5V out at the leads to...

heater hose connector on engine block needs replacing

Thanks for the help. Time to get a bigger hammer. :)

heater hose connector on engine block needs replacing

About how much pipe should be sticking out of the block when done? I was only able to drive mine about 1/4 inch, and something tells me that's not good enough. Thanks.

    A/C or not A/C

Good call, Dave. Yes, the crank pulley has an outer race that isn't used. So does the alternator pulley, for that matter. Someone must have pulled the a/c from the car. I guess now I get to decide if I want to track down a system to put back in.

    A/C or not A/C

Thanks, All. Here's what I found ... my heater controls have selections for a/c, my firewall has the helmet opening, and my cowl does not have a vent hole in the driver side. I guess I can conclude that my 71 came with factory air, and somewhere along the line all the underhood components were...

    A/C or not A/C

Is there a way to tell if a 71 Mustang came with A/C, when none of the underhood components are there? If the heater controls have an A/C setting, is that a sign ... Or did Ford use standard controls, whether or not they had air?

    Power Steering Gear Box Installation

And there's nothing in the steering shaft that would change the ratio at the input to the gearbox? 1 rotation of the steering wheel = 1 rotation of the input shaft?

    Power Steering Gear Box Installation

So, now I need to ask a crazy question ... when we're talking "turns" from lock to lock, is a turn 1 complete revolution of the input shaft? So, 4 turns is 4 complete revolutions, as opposed to say 4 half revolutions?

    Horn Location

Got it. Thanks for the help.

    Horn Location

I'm working on repairing / restoring the underhood wiring harness. The wiring diagram shows there should be 2 horns. My 71 only has one horn on the driver side shock tower. I've searched the web for pics of the horns, but haven't found one. Would someone mind posting a pic showing the location...

    Power Steering Gear Box Installation

Thanks, All. Don't understand how/why that would have been changed in the rebuild, but guess I'm making a trip to back to NAPA.

    Power Steering Gear Box Installation

I estimate the sector shaft rotates about 42 degrees, from lock to lock.

    Power Steering Gear Box Installation

Thanks, Chuck. Mine is definitely not 3 to 4. It's not even a full 2 revolutions. I wonder if something went wrong in the rebuild? I measured the rotations more closely ... it's about 1 7/8 turns, lock to lock.

    Power Steering Gear Box Installation

Does anyone know the standard number of revolutions, stop to stop, of the input shaft on a 1971 power steering gear box? Just had mine rebuilt through NAPA, and am trying to make sure the gear box is centered between the stops before installing. I'll be honest that I did not check what it was...

    351C Rebuild - Heads

Great feedback, everyone. As usual, not disappointed with the help from this forum. I think I've decided to go with the iron 4V heads, aluminum dual plane, and exhaust headers in the rebuild. Found a pretty good price on both the cores and the machine work. I will spend some time on the cam...

    351C Rebuild - Heads

Thanks for all the great input. I've learned a lot. One interesting thing I've noticed both on this forum and around the web, in general ... I've heard guys that are OK with a rebuild on the U.S. 2V heads, and others that regretted not going to 4V. Some like the performance of switching to...

    351C Rebuild - Heads

Thanks, Everyone. Some real-world experience and ideas I hadn't considered, like using pop-up pistons with an open chamber head. I was thinking it would be geat to know at what compression you're likely to start getting into trouble with either style head, closed chamber and open chamber. Is...
