    What am o doing wrong

    The knob on the left is the replacement, the one on the right is the original and below is the 73 crank. You can see the protrusion that stops the knob from fitting on the crank. I don't know what could be done to get it to work.

    The replacement knobs aren't meant for 73s. The cranks are different than 71-72. They might be made to work but I think it would be fairly difficult.
