    Restoring a 1973 Mach 1

The water leaving the cowl should go through a small (about 1.5 inches) semicircular opening on each side that allows it to flow down the inside of the fender (which is removable) and onto the ground behind each front tire. You can just remove the fender and see if there is any rust there. If...

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

Took the Rickster out for a another test drive today with my adult son, Chance. We fixed a small fuel leak at one fitting near the fuel tank, and then took it out for another test drive. We did about 5 miles and brought it back to the garage, adjusted the timing, and took it out for another...

    Restoring a 1973 Mach 1

I thought the Rickster cowl was okay when I got the car. I put a water hose into the cowl and found water on the floor of the passenger compartment confirming that the cowl was rusted out around the air hats. It was a quick and easy way to confirm that the rust monster was also in the cowl.

    Restoring a 1973 Mach 1

I would suggest disassembling it, as needed, and then moving on to the next section. As giantpune said, labeling everything as you remove it will save a lot of time (and frustration) in reassembly. Your project seems pretty solid, so major disassembly may not be required. Double check the...

    Restoring a 1973 Mach 1

Hey Alan, Welcome from NE Tennessee. That looks like a nice solid starting point for your restoration project. It's in much better shape that what I started with. I built the Rickster for my twin brother who was lost to Covid in July 2020. I pretty much replaced most of the sheet metal and...

the love-hate relationship 73 Mach1 bright green gold

Nice work! Looking at your pictures gives me flashbacks to working on the Rickster. It's nice to see someone else just as crazy as me, restoring a car that should have been a parts car. When it's all done, it will be better than the day it was new, and all because of your dedication to the...

    New Shop is 99.9% done

Congrats on the new shop, Brian. I know how excited you must be to finally get that finished after dealing with the delays caused by scumbag scam artists. It looks fantastic. I really like that loft with the windows, and it looks tall enough for a lift, too. Now the fun begins. Getting...

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

Thanks, guys. No Sheriff, I wasn't moving that fast. There is a small boo-boo in the paint on the bottom of the passenger door, and the painter wants me to bring it to his shop so he can fix it. I opted to leave the stripe off that area so he won't have to worry about it when he's fixing it...

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

The Rickster made it's first test drive today. I got the new fuel pump installed in the tank, and got the tank back into the car this morning. It was a pain in the butt doing it alone, but I got it done. Hitting the key, the pump cycled as it was supposed to. My buddy, James, came over after...

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

Well, we tracked down some of the problem to the fuel pump relay. The pink and blue wires from the Sniper EFI were on the 85 and 86 terminals of the fuel pump relay, instead of the 86 and 85. I swapped them over and things to seem better. Backing out of the shop, again, it died and wouldn't...

    71 Mach 1 - Novice Restoration

Welcome from NE Tennessee, Zach. You must be crazy to tackle a project like that, so you'll fit right in around here. I am just finishing up the Rickster, my 73 Mach 1 resoration, and started having flashbacks and broke into a sweat when I saw your pictures. You can find the build thread for...

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

Yes, Paul M. If I were to sell the Rickster (not going to happen), I would also realize only about $5/hour. Fortunately, that's not why we rebuild/restore these cars. :) Today, my friend came over to help me get the Sniper EFI working. His day job is tech support for Holley. He brought...

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

Thanks, guys. Yes, I'm a little frustrated and discouraged, but I am so close I can taste it. The wife will definitely be recording it. Once I know it runs, I'll have to get it to the alignment shop and I'm looking forward to that. The frame for the 76 Bronco will be here next week, so I...

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

A few days ago, I had cleaned up the O2 sensor and reinstalled it, pulled the plugs and replaced them, and changed the gas diluted oil and oil filter. I got the new windshield and got it installed, and got the rear view mirror attached and back up camera is hooked up. I'm not sure I like it...

    Radiator Overflow Tank

Hey MaddMike, I installed a radiator overflow catch can on the Rickster. Here is a link showing what I did. https://7173mustangs.com/threads/the-rickster-a-73-mach-1-work-in-progress.16772/post-414648 It's very similar to what Gil Hale did on his Mach 1. If I were to do it over, I'd go with...

    Tim's 1973 Mach 1 rebuild thread - it's done in 2023 on it's 50th birthday!

That is looking great, Tim. I've been wondering where you've been. I see you've been busy. Congratulations.

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

Thanks, guys. I've stepped back from the project for a couple days, and thinking about it, I can still do a test drive with a small chunk out of the windshield and without the rear view mirror. It's just so frustrating that I now have to replace what was a perfectly good windshield, not only...
