Summer deadline - 72 Mach 1 Build thread

hmmmm, found a nasty rust hole on the shock tower, not sure what is backing it up..... unless someone says otherwise i will "cut and butt" it. initial view of passenger side cowl below : in a previous post i asked whether it was feasible to cut the section above to get access to the cowl...

Summer deadline - 72 Mach 1 Build thread

not much progress during the week, battery apron removed and repro panel trial fitted. i don't like the repro, so much for CJPP "Classic" part. If anyone knows that i can get a less wrinkle free panel let me know from where and i will re-order. I also have the original panel and it was not...

    MuscleTang mod project thread (1971 M-Mach 1)

Great build thread Tony, with lots of sub-threads to navigate through. Well done ! Your persistence and patience shines through so kudos for you for having a plan and sticking to it. Hope i can demonstrate the same level of commitment even when it gets tough for my rebuild. On the welder front...

Summer deadline - 72 Mach 1 Build thread

Tony, thanks for all the tips, will definitely reach out with questions, good to know someone has been on the road and paved a way forward like you, i don't believe seller lied and think the 2 years in which the car was in probate and parked up is where the bulk of the rust occurred.  Plus the...

Summer deadline - 72 Mach 1 Build thread

that reminds me of a question that's been bugging me. what do the drain holes on the floor pan do ? they are plugged up with a cover, or screwed in with a metal plate as in the rear of the front seat, is the idea to release the covers when you discover a leak, do they magically open when there...

Summer deadline - 72 Mach 1 Build thread

Found my build sheet which I hope is not an omen..... In other news, no pics but i removed most of the spot welds on the battery fender apron, hope to have the old rusted and poorly patched panel out tomorrow and fresh steel in over the weekend. On the floor pan then I may just patch rust...

    floor pans

I've just ordered the CJPP "CJ Classic" left and right floor pans, and dynacorn seat platforms. will know in a week or so if they're the optimal parts when I start fitting them. From what I've read, there will always be the need to do some fettling, i.e. no panels are perfect.

Summer deadline - 72 Mach 1 Build thread

i just forfeited a holiday to pay for all the parts. I mainly use CJPP, post Brexit we're f£$%ed every which way so just get on and pay for it..... hopefully when the US trade deal comes along (with no strings attached pls) we get tax free imports and can buy parts to our hearts content :)...

Summer deadline - 72 Mach 1 Build thread

ha, i always planned to get to the floor at some point just didnt think it was this bad. from the underneath it looked solid but thinking about it now, seller put some nice new carpets in (actually they're not so nice and will get thrown in the bin when I'm done) and undersealed car so one...

Summer deadline - 72 Mach 1 Build thread

thanks, I tried Rockauto, they're total cost including shipping and import tax was nearly $1400 so I'm afraid i had to skip it.  Don - if you're reading this, i did try Ohio Mustangs (hope i was looking at the right one) but the details on the panels was sparse, didn't say which manufacturer...

Summer deadline - 72 Mach 1 Build thread

I am going to need full floor pans, and seat mounts. I sanded back the driver side floor. There are just too many pinhole rust spots for my liking, better a seamed weld along edges than multiple patches, I need to do this right whilst the car is dismantled I won't get another chance...

Summer deadline - 72 Mach 1 Build thread

thanks, yes this is my first rebuild although I've done little things in the past not a complete rebuild. I'll farm out as appropriate, but even so, i think my thread title was premature....

    Installed XMAT this weekend

I'm liking the look of the Xmat, thanks for the writeup. Do you have to apply glue or does it come with ts own adhesive ? Is it breathable ? when i pulled my 72's carpet apart the original factory underlay just felt damp so looking at options, i.e. go with performance and modern tech or factory...

Summer deadline - 72 Mach 1 Build thread

This was going to be a partial restoration, complete mechanical overhaul with external body left for later phase (although rust would be treated as encountered) 1/Engine and trans out. 2/All mechanical parts in engine bay and to back to be removed. 3/ Fuel and brake system removed 4/ Front...

Summer deadline - 72 Mach 1 Build thread

Anyways, this all happened in early 2010, and the car shipped over. I picked it up, and over the next few months, did some minor cosmetic changes, servicing etc, and attended some Mustang meets as well as weekend drives. The car was garaged a lot more than it was driven, and since my purchase...

Summer deadline - 72 Mach 1 Build thread

Hi all After posing a few questions on the forums for which I am incredibly grateful for the depth of knowledge, I have decided to migrate my restoration build to a proper thread, to help me stay focused, and to share my journey, with the hope that I arrive at my intended destination. Where to...

    Fuel line clips to body

Stanglover, I managed to remove it by lifting up the carpet as per your advice. But, OMG i do not like what i saw under there, metal cancer (I can't say the dreaded "R" word)  I'll update in a separate build thread, but 2-3 weeks now added to my schedule :(

WTB Passenger side Exhaust manifold for 72 Mach 1 - DOAE-9430-B

if it was a hairline crack i would have got it welded. This is a complete break, i believe caused by a damaged engine mount resulting in vibrations (my guess anyway...) So I would really like to, if from an aesthetic point of view, just get the part replaced.  Good to know there are alternate...
