I always used Etching Mag cleaner to "restore" my cast aluminum parts, then a coat of clear engine enamel to protect the fresh etch.

I'd buy a gasket kit and go through that motor before trying to install and run it. You'd be able to check the lifter valley for the threaded bosses for the roller cam (which that motor should have had IIRC) spider lifter bar retainer. Better to do it now than yank it and go through it later.

Did you adjust them to their highest setting? When I put the oem spoiler on mine the stock base rods worked fine once I moved them to the furthest notch.
