    71 351 Cleveland starting/cranking issue

That’s good to know! This one wasn’t electrical failure. Turns out the shaft was loose and had a lot of play. So it spun freely on the bench test to easily pass but when under stress in the car it seized up. That’s my best interpretation.

    71 351 Cleveland starting/cranking issue

Follow up. The new starter fixed the issue. After being told the starter was good I went down this rabbit hole trying to figure it out. Thanks to everyone who commented because I learned a lot from this one. Every input was valuable to me. Thanks to the O’Reillys tech who was smart enough...

    71 351 Cleveland starting/cranking issue

I just had the starter tested again. It passed again. However this time the tech was savy enough of a mechanic that he could tell by the sound and play in the shaft that it was bad. Free replacement going in tomorrow and I’ll let you know.

    71 351 Cleveland starting/cranking issue

I’m going to double check everything again. Battery is 8 mo old. Starter is just over 1 year old. I’m leaning towards the starter again even though it was checked out. Under warranty so easy switch. Nothing else seems apparent. Got timing set and tuned carb now. Ran beautifully for 20...

Thanks. Good idea. I’ll do that.

I had the starter tested a few weeks ago and it passed.

Starter may be bad. But it’s only a couple years old and very little use. But still possible. No headers

    71 351 Cleveland starting/cranking issue

If you read above I’m not sure. Still don’t know. It’ll start right up now (timing not set yet) and run smoothly. However, after warming up today it went immediately back to a no crank issue. Then it cooled down and cranked just fine. I’m clueless but still investigating.

    71 351 Cleveland starting/cranking issue

Well….thats a really good question. It’s still a bit of a mystery to me but here’s my best guess. Compression along with possibly lack of lubricants from sitting caused resistance in the crank. I continually had to charge the battery after each attempt at slow cranking. Eventually when the...

    71 351 Cleveland starting/cranking issue

It’s running again! All the stars aligned and we’re back in business. Now I can get down to the fun and easy stuff again like timing and fluid changes. Thanks for all the input as it was invaluable and I learned so much during this mechanical adventure.

    71 351 Cleveland starting/cranking issue

Definitely seems to be a compression resistance. 4 plugs back in and struggling to crank. Underpowered starter maybe? Same starter when it was normal. Not enough voltage to starter? More questions but at least we’re ruling out some things.

    71 351 Cleveland starting/cranking issue

I’m back on this today. I did in fact have the dizzy 180 off. Changed that a couple weeks ago. Put in a new ignition solenoid switch. That did not solve the slow crank though. I just took out all the plugs and it cranks freely. I’m gonna recheck TDC timing and putting things together...

    71 351 Cleveland starting/cranking issue

Definitely getting some large voltage drop numbers from the battery to the starter along with both cables getting hot. Should I assume that it’s the starter relay if all the connections are good?

Thank you for that! I’ve avoided electrical knowledge for decades other than the basics. I’m ready now. Ha

    71 351 Cleveland starting/cranking issue

Thanks guys! It’s definitely a crank issue. It started just fine with good crank a few months ago. Then lost spark. Now this. I do have a good ground cable. Cleaned all connections even though they looked ok. I definitely need to check the voltage drop. Ok stupid question but I’m not sure...

    71 351 Cleveland starting/cranking issue

Thanks for the reply. I have fuel (rebuilt the carb) I’ll re check the voltage. I’ll search here for that. I know timing isn’t right yet but without more than 2 seconds of crank I can’t experiment much. Dizzy is pointing to #1 at TDC. I’ve tried to get about 10 btdc roughly. But again it...

    71 351 Cleveland starting/cranking issue

I'm an average mechanic and have accomplished more in the last week than I thought possible. I hate electronics. But now I'm at a dead end and need your help. 1. Had no spark 2. Tested battery and coil. passed 3. Diagnosed a bad magnetic pickup in a relatively new distributor and replaced...
