Restoring and fixing as I go.
Summer will be here shortly . Decided to start refurbishing my heater box.

Purchased the Gasket set for the AC Heater box. Now I understand the comments

on the replacement gasket kits ..

I took the box apart and started cleaning .

Flapper was rusted to the max and definitely needs replacement.

Thanks Carolina_Mountain_Mustangs for the advise on removal. :)

Looking for replacement parts . Checked on the West Coast Cougar site (Advertised on the instructional video)- nothing there.

Anyone know where to get the above replacement parts for the AC Heater box?

I don't have just the flapper maybe Don @ Ohio Mustang has a bad box with good flapper.

Be sure to add the wire mesh where the box fits up to the cowl, pic attached.

I would also take a mirror and look into the opening in the cowl and see if any critters have piled stuff up there that holds water. I have found rats nests many times in the cowl and the heater box. That is why I have started putting the wire under the plastic cowl vents, pic. att. and also over the heater box. Since the new seals are nothing like the originals I put the mesh between the two foam pieces they supplied. I paint the mesh black under the cowl vents and attach with small zip ties. You can also blast the cowl vents with walnut shells and they will look new. You can also flatten them back out with heat gun. The mesh wire commonly called box wire can be purchased at your local hardware / home center I use 1/4". Lots of stuff gets inside the cowl over the years blow it out good and maybe do a little restore there. I put POR 15 inside mine then sprayed some undercoat where I could. Not doing a restore this is my driver so just trying to make it last longer than I do, lol.

If your heater box is beat up give it a proper cleaning and you can spray with some satin clear and it will look new. You can test all of your vacuum motors on the flappers with a brake bleeder and see if they leak or don't even work.

And as I said before test the new heater core and air cond. core with air pressure under water before installing. They do come NOS with leaks.

They call it Galvanized Steel Hardware Cloth with 1/4" mesh. You might be able to get smaller amount at a True Value or some place like that. It is cheap.

I spray it with semi gloss or flat black paint.

There are two other openings that the critters can get in they are under the fenders, drains for the cowl. You can see the black POR 15 that ran out of the drain from me coating inside the cowl. You have to pull the fenders to get to them. You can form up a small piece to fit in there also. Critters make a mess and we have chipmunks, mice, squirrels, snakes, yes snakes. Was sitting in one car and black snake came out from under the dash. To my knowledge there are not other factory holes anything can get in other than insects. Of course rust holes don't count.
