The car runs fine I was trying to replace a hose I was missing. I know something is missing if my memory serves me right. I had a 73 Mach 1 30 some years ago and I remembered the hose from then. It makes sense what your saying because of the small filter on the inside of the air cleaner canister.  The blue canister near the fire wall has a hose going in and the 2nd stack on it looks like it needs a hose or a cap it’s open now. I wasn’t sure what that canister was for.  Having that hooked up would that give me better gas mileage or should I go by the old saying if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
