I'm in the market for a new paint gun. I'll use it to paint 1 or maybe 2 cars per year spraying primers, base coat/cleat coat applications. Looking for a decent gun that tends to limit orange peel.

Recommendations/What should I get?

Are there any decent guns in the $300-400 range?

Thanks,

Don

LOL "limits orange peel" I think that come from the Sprayee not the sprayer:p Good Luck in your quest
I figured one of the forum jokers would pop up and say something like that. :D

The sprayee can only compensate so much for a poor quality sprayer & my Harbor Freight sprayer is about as cheap as they come.

We sell Iwata guns at work (LKQ/Keystone Automotive). Unfortunately, I am not well versed in what makes a good gun, well, good. The body shop guys unanimously report to me "Iwata = good". I see no problem in acquiring a good gun for your target price.

The last I painted an overall was about 20 years ago using lacquer primer and black DuPont Centari paint. And, yes, I primed and painted with the same Binks suction gun.

Definitely need 3 guns (or tips) to spray this newfangled "PolyBaseEuroUrethaneWaterborneHardenerReducerRetarderAccelerator" stuff. Could probably "get away" with not having the best primer gun for shooting filler/primer. Follow the paint manufacturers HVLP hardware/spraying/mixing directions to a T, and you should be fine.

Want the Best ? Then buy a sata jet $$$$$...But for primers & all around use I use a home depot husky hvlp gun I bought for like 59.95 WORKS GREAT !! For that money you could buy 2 keep one for primer only & one for paint work. Surprised the hell out of me (I do have sata jets that I used when I did this everyday for a living) For your use try one might surprise you !

$60 bucks sounds like a deal! I'll try it plus I heavily trust your advice...you know your stuff Scott! Do I need different tips for the Husky gun?

Don,

Thanks for the compliment !

It is a deal I originally bought it to spray the underside & interior of the stang with rust bullet..I was thinking it was a throwaway ..Ended up spraying the epoxy primer & was really impressed ! Then I did a set of motorcycle tanks & used it for the clear worked really good again ! I haven't sprayed any base coat with it yet but I don't see why it wouldn't work just as good..You can get some different tips but the best thing to do is get an old hood or fender & play around spraying different materials..with different tips..I haven't changed the tip so & the tip that comes with it works well for primers & clears..Again at that price at least you will have a proven good gun for spraying primers at the bare minimum.

The spray gun is only one factor.

Air Tempature, the substright tempurature, relative humidity, solvents and any retractor or advancer used impact how the paint will flow and how fast it flashes off.

Get the paint manufactures data sheets, (most are online) this will give you the perameters you should be following.

If you have all this right and a little technique you should be able to use a wagner airless power sprayer and have it turn out nice.

This will save you finding and buying one of those new expensive LOPHV spray guns (Low Orange Peel High Volume)

That's great! LOPHV gun...Love it. Maybe I should also ask what paint likes 95* & 100% humidity like we have in Mobile most of the year. Lol

I have to agree with Totaled. There are many new brands on the market that work fairly well, but consider who they copy only with cheaper parts. I personally will take a Binks or Devillbis any day when the chips are down and I need good atomazation and even distribution. You might consider checking into a Devilbis kit, They have a line they call starting line which will get you a couple guns of different sizes in your price range. Or step up to the Finish Line products and get one good one for your 3-4 price. On the other side Heck I have a Campbell Hausfield gun that I like for the general purpose jobs, and it was only 60.00 bucks.

Check at Eastwood or TCP Global online they have numerous kits and different brands.
