    Driveshaft Markings

Hi Everyone, was cleaning off the driveshaft yesterday and started to reveal the color stripe markings.  Problem is, whatever is on the driveshaft is not going to come off without also removing the stripes.  The build sheet was long gone when I bought the car.  Is there a chart somewhere that...

    1973 Mach 1 parting out

Stationary quarter windows?  I didn’t know there was such a thing! :)  Now you have me wondering ... I just assumed I was missing the regulator parts. How can you tell? How much do you want for the set of bezels?

    1973 Mach 1 parting out

Did the switch bezels sell? I also need complete fastback quarter window regulator assemblies ... both sided. Thanks!

    Parking Brake Cables

Hi Everyone, took much longer than I had hoped, but I'm checking back in to let you know the final solution.  I was finally able to get the idler bracket welded in the correct location on the floor pan.  Took some time because my welder's lift was out of commission.  Once that was done, I fed...

Another option that might work. Good idea. Thanks!

    Parking Brake Cables

Two things I know for sure right now ... 1) I don't have one of those rare 4-door models  :)  2) The idler/tensioner bracket can't go where it wants to right now.  Whether I get the existing cables to work, or swap them, or buy new, or custom make them ... that bracket has to go in the proper...

    Parking Brake Cables

Thanks, Rich.  Yeah, since my cable is still installed in the drum, that measurement of 128" is from where it comes out the back of the drum.  It looks like there's roughly another 5" inside the drum, so that 133" total length sounds right.  I can get the true measurement when I pull the cable...

    Parking Brake Cables

Thanks, Rich. You guys are sending great photos! I actually have the tension spring nut about where yours is in that pic. My earlier pic shows where my idler bracket would currently land with the cables taut. I could get some help to take a wider shot like yours, from the middle of the car...

    Parking Brake Cables

Awesome! Thanks for the measurements and great diagram, guys! Unfortunately, I'm now at a loss. My cable lengths are in line with Ryan's, if not a little longer. And, if I place the bracket in that location on Rich's diagram, the cable will not reach the idler arm. In fact, it doesn't come...

    Parking Brake Cables

Thanks, David.  The prior owner must have installed new floor pans because there is no indication where the idler bracket used to be located.  If it's not too much trouble, what would be very helpful are the 2 measurements from both the side frame rail and the cross member to the idler hole...

    Parking Brake Cables

Does anyone happen to know how long the rear parking brake cables should be?  For the new ones I installed, the long cable is about 128" from the drum, and the short cable is about 24" from the drum. I was set to finish the parking brake system this weekend.  I already have the rear driver...

    Front Parking Brake Cable

Awesome! Glad I didn't start cutting already. For whatever reason, whoever installed the floor pan routed the cable in the wrong place. I wouldn't have known without your help. Thanks!

    Front Parking Brake Cable

Ryan, do I see correctly that your cable runs down the inside of the floor pan, and goes through the floor just before it reaches the bend to the flat part of the pan?  This is very similar routing to my dad's 70 Torino, but very different from how mine runs now (or did).  My cable was going...

    Front Parking Brake Cable

Happy 4th of July, Everyone!  Quick question concerning the routing of the front parking brake cable.  As I was working on the rear drum brakes on my '71, I discovered the front cable from the parking brake foot pedal was frozen.  No amount of soaking in penetrating oil was going to free this...

    Choke

Thanks. I assume this means there's a new alternator in my future. Had I not been checking sources to connect the choke, I probably would have never noticed this ... at least not until the alternator completely failed.

    Choke

Hello, I've been looking for a place to connect my electric choke, and found this thread. I was preparing to hook the choke to the stator post on the alternator, and I may have a problem. This post has about 10.5V ... all the time ... even with the key off. Is this correct? I understood the...

    Engine Surging, Tach Bounce

Here's what I've discovered in road testing this problem the last couple days ... Ported vacuum = poor performance No vacuum = better performance Manifold vacuum = best performance I need to go back and double check timing with each of those, and it's been awhile since I've listened for...

    Engine Surging, Tach Bounce

Some good points to look at, Guys. Thanks! I did find this interesting discussion on a forum that argues using manifold vacuum instead of ported ... http://www.bangshift.com/forum/forum/bangshift/tech-section/32851-ported-vs-manifold-vacuum-advance

    Engine Surging, Tach Bounce

The advance vacuum line is connected to the carburetor port behind the primary metering block. The problem seems to start above 2000 rpm or so, and doesn't go away until the engine is slowly brought back below. But, even gradual acceleration is much rougher with the advance connected. Tach...

    Engine Surging, Tach Bounce

So, I identified the source of the problem I've been having for the last week or so. A little background ... Rebuilt 351C 4V, Holley 750 on Edelbrock dual plane, FMX trans. Starts fine. Idles pretty smooth. On the road, as the speed gets up to 35 - 40 mph the engine starts surging, the tach...
