Newly built engine is leaking coolant and I'm stumped

This morning I was able to was able to drain the cooling system, removed the alternator, and got a lifting sling on the motor. I picked it up enough to remove the motor mount, pressurized the cooling system, and hit it with the black light. A steady stream of coolant ran from the freeze plug...

Lower Windshield Bracket Stops for 71 Fastback

Is that the two that the bottom of the windshield rests on, and the smaller stop in the middle for the wiper? I have all three from a 73, if they will fit. PM me.

Newly built engine is leaking coolant and I'm stumped

Hey Giantpune, that's a really good idea. Not exactly what I did, but kind of. I ran to O'Reilly's and picked up some UV coolant dye and black light. I drained the cooling system into a 5 gal bucket, added the dye, and then refilled the radiator. I also got a radiator pressure tester and...

Newly built engine is leaking coolant and I'm stumped

I haven't even gotten to add oil to it yet. That was next, but the coolant leak sidetracked me. I did remove the oil drain plug, but nothing there but a few drops of oil - no coolant. The coolant leak is very slow, but does drip, like 1 or 2 drops every hour. And yes, Boilermaster, I am...

Newly built engine is leaking coolant and I'm stumped

The coolant level in the radiator hasn't gone down significantly. It's down less than 1/8". I did drop the transmission. What a pain in the backside. The torque convertor did not want to separate from the flexplate. It took the better part of a day to get the flexplate and torque convertor...

Newly built engine is leaking coolant and I'm stumped

Thanks, guys. Bentworker. All the block drains were installed with sealant and are dry. I also checked all the freeze plugs, and they are dry. Ron Tanzi, pressure testing was my next step. I was thinking of adding UV dye to the coolant to make any leak more visible. You said since the...

Newly built engine is leaking coolant and I'm stumped

The 351C motor I built for the Rickster has been installed, transmission is in, exhaust is in, and fuel system plumbing is done. I've checked the fuel system for leaks, but have no fuel in the tank yet. I was hoping to start the engine for the first time this weekend. I filled it with coolant...

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

Thanks, Gil. I have watched I think all of your AOD swap videos, some more than once. Very useful. I had heard horror stories about AOD transmissions burning up because the TV cable was set improperly, and have watched several videos on it. At this point, I am waiting on the speedo gear...

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

Thanks, Jeff. Over the last few days, I've been able to get the motor dropped in, and the mounts bolted up. Since the trunk is now painted, I got the battery tray bolted in and the battery secured. I got a transmission jack, to put the AOD transmission in place. I loosened the headers just...

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

I would love to have it done in time for Power Tour, but I don't think it will happen. Nashville is 4 hours away, and I think that might be a little ambitious until after I've put a couple hundred local miles on it. I do have the motor and transmission in it, though. Measuring for a...

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

No need to steal pictures, Fabrice. Consider them a gift. ;-) I have been working on the Rickster. I've got the trunk pretty much completed. I've got the inside of the trunk sprayed with spatter paint, and I think it looks really good. I've got to get a plug for that drain hole in the...

    Which Mustang Suppliers?

I would recommend Ohio Mustang Supply. Don is super knowledgeable about our cars and is great to work with.

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

Absolutely. Don at Ohio Mustang Supply is a stand up guy. The 72 mounts arrived in the mail Thursday afternoon, and were blasted and painted before suppertime. Friday morning, I was able to drop the motor in and it bolted right in. I ran battery cables from the engine bay to the trunk for...

Question about door window attachment studs

Thanks, Hemikiller. That's interesting. The windows that came out of the doors that are now on the car were from the coupe are up in the loft. They have bolts, while the window from the rusted out Mach 1 doors were riveted. I think I've got it figured out, now, just need to get them installed.

Question about door window attachment studs

Sometime in the middle of last night, I came up with what I think will work. I grabbed a few bolts from the bin, and determined that a 1/4" bolt fit that hole quite nicely. I got some 1/4" fender washers to spread the load and will just have to reach up behind the window with a wrench when...

Question about door window attachment studs

Today, I retrieved the window glass out of the Rickster's rusted out doors. The internals were in pretty decent shape, considering the bottoms of the door shells were completely rusted out. When I went to remove the driver side window, after removing the stops and rubbing pads, I rolled the...

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

Thanks, Don. I got the motor pulled out and pulled the frame mounts. Here's a picture of one of them. I didn't find a part number on them, but they look like 73's.

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

I've spent a good part of the day trying to get the motor in place. I pulled the alternator, PS pump and AC compressor, and got it hanging from the engine hoist. Working alone, it took a little time, but I got the driver side motor mount bolted up. I thought things were going pretty well...

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

Well, the Rickster made it home. Some parts are still at the painters getting finished up, but the body and hood are home, and they sure do look nice. The Rickster out in the sunlight. and back in the shop ready to get put back together. I'm moving the battery to the trunk, so I have...
