Sooo, I have spent the past couple days trying to salvage my original ram air hood inserts/flappers and actuators... For the level of restoration I am hoping to achieve, they simply will not work.

The great state of AZ, heat and years of hard use did them in, plain and simple. I have the unenviable task of searching for original replacements and this may take a while. So I am putting the word out that I am looking for both sides, complete and in good shape. The actuators need to hold vacuum...  If you know anyone with a decent set or NOS they are willing to sell me for my restoration, have them contact me at [email protected]

There are just some parts that cannot be restored properly and although I have managed to restore many original pieces on this car, I always knew the ram air inserts were going to be a problem. That problem is here now and I will have to work on locating a replacement set. Fortunately, my under hood ram air plate is in pretty decent shape after hours of removing old poorly applied paint, dirt, etc.

I think for the time being, I will clean/paint my originals as best I can until I can locate a replacement set. In the mean time, the show must go on...
I just did mine yesterday using the old ram air base and a new third party actuator as a donor, before I started they looked much like yours do now... here is the results.

Looks like a nice alternative, I was following your thread also... I also need the fiber pieces in nice shape as mine were overcome with years of abuse, two poor paint jobs and age..., at the end of the day, I require the entire assembly for each side. I have decided against trying to alter my actuators like yours, only because I am doing a pretty high level restoration and would like to keep it original looking, very... BTW, I like what you have done, good ingenuity!

Thanks. Thought might help provide a good alternative until you found a set of nice originals. I'll keep an eye out for a pair and let you know if I find a set. Have you posted any pictures of your project? I'd like to follow your progress and given the level of your restoration maybe get a few pointers.

I picked up the one NPD repro in the pictures years ago. Kept it hoping to find another, but never did. If you are not looking to achieve thoroughbred level originality, then try copying the NPD repro using a third party donor. It was not hard to do and only took about a hour and a half to complete (Plating aside). If want them silver instead of yellow chromate then just remove the finish and buff them a bit.
