I know the trunk gasket thing has been brought up before and I have looked at old posts. Can anyone definitively say they bought gasket from XYZ and it worked from get go and trunk lid would close? Seems like everyone cant close their trunk lid after a gasket change. Thats my case now. Thanks

 
I can close mine fine and I believe I got it from Don at Ohio Mustang. In fact, we had 3 children once and I sold 1 to buy parts from him.

Kidding... We left that one locked in the attic when we moved for back talking or at least that is what I tell the girls.

In most cases, once you can get the trunk lid closed, the gasket will settle in and compress enough over time to allow the lid to close easily.. I've done quite a few of these and not had the problem you are having.. Keep in mind that the weatherstrip must be seated all the way down into the channel.

It's more the type of material used to make the gasket than the lack of holes. The off-brand I had was very hard material - I hesitate to call it rubber since I do not think it had any real rubber material in it.

 
I replaced mine a few months ago with the offerings from Steel Rubber. It was tough getting is shut at first but it compressed a bit and seems find now. No holes were poked!!! The 'gasket' thing made me think...did I miss something - then realized it was weather stripping.

Was the trunk w-strip actually made by Steel rubber or did it have a Daniel Carpenter label on it?

Sorry I didnt see any labels on it and have no idea who made it.

 
The trunk weatherstrip I have is a Daniel Carpenter piece. It doesn't have holes, trunk lid is hard to close.

 
I added a bunch of hidden holes in it with a sharp awl and it didnt really change a thing as far as closing goes.

 
All of the original trunk rubbers had holes. Holes not just punch a sharp object in. They were about 1/16" dia. with nothing left in the hole. The inside of the rubber should be hollow to allow compression and the holes let the air out.

You have to install these on a full moon on the third Wednesday of the month or they won't work, lol.
