can be done by hand, Just be careful and take your time doing it. Last motor i put rings on was a Cummins M11,put them on by hand just took my time

I got some cheap pliers at Sears, rings are very sharp. Also do not try to bend the first 2 rings by placing one end in the slot and rotating them around the piston. this only works on the oil ring spacers.
