Thanks for the responses!  I think I'll give the slider another shot, i just didn't want to crack that piece because I didn't know what I was doing.

I'm moving it out of the way to get the dash piece out that's in front of the cluster. I was trying to get it out with removing the least amount of things and I may be missing something.

Hah! I got it figured out. It's the switch. The backing behind the top post is broken and it's crumbling apart. I was able to get 12v to the motor directly with a bypass wire and the motor works (yay). Still don't know about the resistor, but we will get to that when the switch is fixed. Now to...

I believe the difference is there is no hole for the trip reset button.

When I got my 302 rebuilt, I had it done with slightly higher compression, and the engine builder told me that it was going to be highest grade gas from here on out. You should be good with the premium stuff.
