Sounds like you need to rebuild/replace the power brake booster.

My 73 Mustang convertible is original black paint, black interior and black top. So, I think you must be mistaken about that.

My 73 Mustang convert. came with both left and right springs. I removed one as it was too much. Now 15 years later, I wish I still had it. The lid stays open if there is no wind. Needs the 2nd spring.
