OK, I think I found the problem. My OIL gauge is on the left side of the 3 gauge pod; TEMP is on the right. The owners manual shows them opposite of mine. That explains why the wiring was reversed (I think !!). John

Thanks for all the great replies. I went to the garage today to start on the trouble shooting tips and thought I would try the "give it a whack" solution. IT WORKED. Is there something that needs to be oiled or sprayed to alleviate this problem ? Thanks, John

How can I test the tach to see if it is the problem or if I have a wiring problem somewhere else ?

It is a Ford factory tach. It appears that the PO replaced the complete wiring harness. The car still starts without the tach working.
