Rusted section of rear fender lip

I would cut out the rust hole on the lip of the wheel well a bit bigger than the rust hole.  Cut it big enough that you can then cut the rust on the outer wheelhouse and still have room to weld the outer wheelhouse patch in.  Once those welds are ground down, you can make a patch for the outer...

Ram Air Hood spring now available!

Pinching the rivets in a press - that's an interesting idea.  I may have to try that.  The hood on the Rickster barely stays up on it's own, and it doesn't even have the nacelles, leading edge hood molding, or ram air plenum installed yet.  For now, I keep vice grips on the hinge to make it stay...

One thing after another—this car hates me!

I agree with Fabrice.  I rebuilt my power steering pump, as I wasn't impressed with the new and rebuilt units that were out there.  To be honest, I rebuilt the pump twice, because I assembled it incorrectly the first time.  The pump mechanism has a number of slippers that can be a pain to get...

    Anodized aluminum trim restore

Hey Tnfastbk, Any updates on pics of the trim or the price of chroming it?  Just curious.

    Seat track(s) and springs

The larger spring goes from the seat track base to the seat bottom, to make the seat ride forward when the seat track release is pulled.

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

Did I ever mention how much I enjoy block sanding?  There's a reason for that. I've gotten a couple coats of hi-build primer on the roof, and guide coat revealed a few low and higher spots.  A thin coat of body filler allowed it to be leveled, and another coat of hi-build and guide coat...

Need recommendations for brake booster source

I had my brake booster rebuilt at Harmon Classic Brakes in Canton, GA.    https://harmonclassicbrakes.com/ My brake booster came back good as, and looking like, new.

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

With the car stripped, it as time for some primer.  The guy I am going to have paint the car suggested High Teck DTM primer, so that is what I went with.  I laid down the first with some reducer to thin it out and to be more of a sealer,.  It was followed by a coat with no reducer making it a...

Sealing panels for long term storage

As others have said, sealing them with an epoxy primer is your best bet to keep surface rust from forming.  Down the road, when you get time to work on everything, some light sanding will open up the cured epoxy layer for body filler or some high build primer.

    Front seat cover install tip.

I don't recall if there was burlap between the seat frame and the foam on the front seats, but I did put in a layer of burlap.  There was padding around the edges, and I did replace that, too.

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

Slowly, but surely, I have been working on things for the Rickster.  I did spend a couple weeks out of town helping my daughter install new flooring in much of her home, or I'd have gotten more done by now.  I have gotten headlight brackets and buckets cleaned up and in primer, and have Kilmat...

    Vapor canister rebuild/restoration

The fuel system vapor canister is an important part of the emission control system.  I had one that I had salvaged from the coupe that burned, and thought it was only the vent cap that was missing, but when I retrieved it from my parts bin to add it to the Mach 1 I am restoring, I found it...

    Front cross member roached

Both the front (strut rod) crossmember and the engine crossmember are available now.  I had to replace both in the Rickster last fall.

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

Midlife, it was a male stripper.  I'm not sure you'd want to see some middle aged guy in a bikini, . ;-)  I think the wife was a little disappointed, though, when she realized the male stripper I hired wasn't an exotic dancer, bur dustless blasting guy. I'm still working on getting the blasting...

    Standard rear seat trim question

Mine were painted a matte black, so they disappeared behind the rear seat back.

    Front cross member roached

As others have noted, that crossmember is available.  It is a pain to remove and replace, with 10 spot welds and about an inch of weld on each side.  It would be easier to replace if the core support is out, but definitely doable even if it isn't.  The core support and engine crossmember will...

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

Well, last Saturday Dustless Blasting came out and stripped the new paint from the Rickster.   What a mess.  Rackerm, you were right.  Sand is everywhere.  I got it back into the garage before nightfall, and since then, I've been vacuuming, brushing, sweeping, wiping, vacuuming, wiping...

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

Thanks guys for the words of encouragement and support.  It was a really tough pill to swallow, but in the end, with all I've put into it, I need it to be right.  I know with that lousy paint job, it would gnaw on me, every time I saw it, and it's good to know you agree that I'm doing the right...

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

After consulting with a couple of experienced body and paint guys, I decided that the only thing to do was to have the Rickster repainted.  With that, it came down to "do I trust the prep work that was done before that paint was laid down?"  Well, I don't.  So, I have decided to have the paint...
