Guys,
I have a 72 Mach 1 in gold glow with ginger trim

The window winder knobs are kind of ok but not brilliant.
I went looking for and ordered new ginger knobs expecting that I would just replace the knobs.

I had to drill out the rivet on the back of the old knob to remove but found that the repro knobs do not fit the factory handles.
What have other people done?

The reproduction handles look like they will work with the repro knobs.
Are the new ginger repro knobs even the right colour as the factory ones look to almost be translucent.

Here are a few pictures.

This is the repro one.

I note the clear knob on the repro hands looks to be right but the individual knobs that are sold separately are different. As in the factory and repro clear ones have a lines coming out from thge centre where as the knobs sold separately have circles.

To stay as close to factory as possible I think the clear ones are right.. But not ginger.
If I want ginger then I have to go with the ones shown above that are not right..

I think my only option if I want to go with the ginger knobs I have is to get another set of handles.

Is there anything that is different in the handles between 69 / 70 and the 71 to 73 ones? Length, appearance?

Thoughts?

From early '72 production (from 10/1/71) and forward, Ford switched to a window handle with a non-replaceable clear knob. The aftermarket ginger knob you purchased is the knob that fits the before 10/1/71 handle. Ford did offer replacement color knobs on the before 10/1/71 handles, but they are no longer available. Ford never released a replacement service clear knob for the '72-73 Mustangs. There are many aftermarket sites that list a clear knob with fitment for '68-73; they are incorrect! You will either have to purchase a new '72-73 style handle with the permanent knob or a '71 style handle that accepts the separate knob.

The 1972 (10-1-71-forward) style handles used the handle with the decal covering the screw hole. (Sourced from the '72 Gran Torino)

During the '73 model year (approx 4/73), Ford replaced the handle with the full-size Ford handle with an open screw hole and no longer used a decal.

Steve. Thanks for the info.\
So the theory is that the knobs on the handles that are on the car that "look" to be ginger were most likely be clear colour ones from the factory and have changed colour due to time and heat.

So the best approach if I want to maintain the original look is to purchase the new repro ones with knobs installed.

Thanks for your help.
