From time to time I check my local Craiglist for 71-73 parts. Today I saw this clutch assembly:

One of my "future" plans is to install a manual transmission in my 71. Right not I have a C6. This is more than a year away, but since I saw this ad, I am wondering if this is something I will need. I am not planing on installing a toploader, but rather a modern transmission such as a TK500/600. If I need something like this, would this be a good buy?

To be honest I have not done much research about it. I know there are hydraulic clutch options, but those can be expensive. Pardon me if this has been covered in length, but I am posting in the spur of the moment since I just saw this ad.

The pedal assembly itself is the same in an auto or manual. I just purchased the pedal and roller bearing kit from Modern Driveline and the clutch cable as well. if you search T5 conversion I have a good list of everything needed and where I got it. I was able to install the new pedal without removing the assembly or dropping the steering column. I did remove drivers seat though.

Thanks. I remember following your thread. How much are the new pedal and bearing kit?

The pedal was $160 and the bearing kit was like $30 or $35.

Here is what I did. I contacted MDL and gave them all the info on my car and that I wanted to convert to a T5. They also do the TKO500/600 conversions. I asked them for a detailed quote. They sent it to me via email. I then sourced the parts on my own from various vendors, some from them, most not. Saved a boatload of cash that way.

The conversion was really not as difficult as I thought it would be. I did it in my garage with no lift (except my redneck car lift I built AKA blocks) and had never done anything this major of a project on a car before. If you have any questions feel free to ask. I think in total I had about $750 in various parts plus the transmission. Also the conversion is SOOOOOOO worth it. Completely different car and driving experience.

Thank you. I don't think it is worth it for me to purchase Craiglist's pedal kit so if anyone is interested feel free to contact the seller. I can help in anyway I can.

Nice to hear. I am definitely heading in the direction of replacing the transmission. I have my wife almost convinced that going manual is the way to go :)

I would suggest searching to see if the main shaft and 2-3 shift problems have been solved on the TKO transmissions, I hope they have been addressed by TREMEC. Chuck
