Creature Features and Chiller Theater

Any members from the Tri State area remember Chiller Theater WPIX Ch 11 and Creature Features WNEW Ch 5 both were monster movie venues that broadcast in the 1960s on Saturday night usually 8pm

I recall many of the films that were shown Fiend without a face , Attack of the Crab Monsters , The Crawling Eye , etc but its hard to remember the shows themselves as I was pretty young at the time,

Creature Features had a horror host named "the creep" who wore dark shades and stayed in the shadows. He asked monster questions aka "creature quotes" before the commercial and first caller to get the correct answer won a prize.

The Creep was played by veteren ch 5 announcer Lou Steel who many remember as the guy who said "it's 10pm do you know where your children are" at the end of the 10:00 news




Anyone remember any of this or better yet have any of the original shows?

Here in Central Ohio, Chiller Theater was hosted by Fritz the Night Owl.

I remember both Chiller Theater and Creature Feature.

Hi Scott; thank you for the reply , I figured anyone growing up in the NY metro area would remember these, They were loads of fun and the 60s was a great time growing up, cool cars , movies and TV shows

I have been looking to find tapes, dvds, etc, of the orig shows but have been unsuccessful so far.

I bought a dvd that had appx 20 movies on it that were exact recreations of 1960s-70s Chiller Theater , Creature Features , Fright Night , All the films had the correct intros , bumpers , station bumpers , endings and even vintage commercials (Agent Zero M , Great Garloo , Six Finger , etc) They are about as close as I have found so far.

The problem is that when these orig aired video tech was still pretty new and super expensive so few people had it.

Hopefully with all the interest in Horror Hosts now some of these will start poping up

Thats pretty cool , once Zacherly left in 63 our Chiller Theater did not have a Horror Host anymore but from what I heard Chiller in other States still continued w/ their local hosts , PA had Chilly Billy , and Zacherly Hosted in California.

Creature Features did the same elsewhere both w/ hosts and w/o.

There were tons of other Horror Movie shows back then in all the states, Goulardi , Svengoolie, Count Igor , Vampire etc....

Its funny how I found a few orig shows from these venues but still no NY Chiller or Creature Features so far..
