Do you have an auto darkening helmet? They help tremendously. There is also a magnification you can get to add to the back of the view screen. Lastly, add light when welding. I have a little magnetic light I focus on the area before I start. You need to make sure it doesn't get in the helmet path or it turns the darkening on. These lights are awesome when it's really dark and help with welding.

In regards to the hotter settings one thing I would say is you usually need to turn the speed up a little. It may be not doable on your project it was just an idea.
I bought an excellent Jackson helmet for this very reason (no point in using the terrible mail slot I used to use) and use a Husky LED work light pointed to highlight the area. Pretty much all the tricks!

I’m getting near perfection with the current settings when I’m not fighting positioning or galvanizing; methinks it’s not necessarily the right thing to change the current welder settings.
