When people talk about the sales of earlier Mustangs and then the comparison to same for our cars, there are many differences. The overall auto industry had learned a lot since 1964 and the intro. Even Ford had popped up some other similar offerings to capture sales.

And remember our cars were designed a few years before they were actually produced. I think they began about 1968... THe old styling buck and clay model pics will show. (can't get to them right now...) Things were quite a bit different then! Ford was very successful in auto racing. Then they killed the program about November 1970!

But I believe the oil supply issues and its related gasoline shortages hit hardest on the 'ponycars' of the early 70's.

Found this pic on Hemmings - really tells the story of the times. It might bring back some memories.
