Actually, the side stripes (both early "hockey stripes" as well as the '73 style) are decals, in either argent or matte black. They can be a challenge to put onto the car, which is why I'm currently in the mindset of leaving mine as a 'no stripe car,' which is how it came from the factory anyway. ;)

The hood treatment, called TuTone, was part of the factory Ram Air option, which came with the Ram Air plenum/duct/air cleaner system, hood locks, and Ram Air decals (appropriate to the engine size - 351 or 429).

Having said that, a lot of folks like the TuTone and put it on their cars regardless of whether they have Ram Air or not as a styling cue. There is a template available, as well as a few threads on this site regarding the hood treatment - there are a lot of different ways to mess it up, and really only one was to get it right.

Look at the examples, follow the directions on the template, use a matte finish, and don't ever wax it, for a faithful restoration that is.

For mine, I went glossy so I can wax it (because of the West Texas sun - it kills flat/matte dark colors). My stencil was also mis-placed by the painter, and I had to adjust it to salvage the end result - but even it's about 2" too far back on my hood.

Hope this helps.

Thanks! It's always easier to come off as knowledgeable when I can throw in some personal experience as well. :whistling: rofl

The hood black or argent had nothing to do with ram air. It was a separate option that could be ordered on any convertible, coupe fastback or Mach 1 with or without ram air. When you got the Tutone Hood Paint option in 73 it cost $18.00 and gave you the hood locks and black or argent paint along with the flat spring hinges to carry the extra weight of the hood locks. The ram air was another option that you could not get after mid year 72 on a 4-V car only 2-V for the remainder of the year and only 2-V in 73 all year.

My car I ordered new did not have ram air but did have the hood locks and black paint and the flat spring hinges. It is a 4-V I did order the ram air and added later.

Wouldn't you like to get the hood locks and paint for $18.00 now?

I believe when you ordered the 4-V 351 you got the NASA hood as part of the package there is no extra line item on my window sticker for the hood itself. Again no hood locks unless you got the Tutone hood paint.

Forgot to add when putting the stripes on regardless of which style you need to be inside with no fans or wind blowing. You can spend lots of time getting them lined up straight and in the right spot before you ever pull the backing off and do the prep work according to their instructions. Use the soapy water and you should have no issue with installing the stripes. They had less than 2 min. to install at the assembly line and were never the same car to car. My 73 had the area around the front marker lights painted black before the stripe was installed and the trim around the light is also black. Looks much better than the colored area in the middle of the black.

I found some gloss stripes online and painted the hood gloss black. I used a brighter colour so it worked out quite well. I have been contemplating removing the side stripes just to see how it would look. I think the stripes make the car look longer where as without it would look taller but shorter.

I have seen cars with the gloss black hood and stripes. When painted a loud color, it works nicely. These at the only pics I could find.of one of my Dads Boss 351s. Its 1977 Corvette yellow with gloss black paint treatment. Looks great.

I'm not arguing the point (since I wasn't there, and/or haven't ordered a car before), just going based on what's been relayed here by various members.

Having said that, I've never seen a Ram Air car not have the TuTone/hood locks, and I've never seen the TuTone done by the factory on a non Ram Air car. I'm thinking it was one of those things that was rarely, if ever, executed on the order form one without the other.

Good information, David. I know enough that anything can be ordered as optional equipment as long as the dollar amounts get computed into the sale price. ;)

The black or argent paint on hood was part of the Ram Air Package but it was also a stand alone option for any car with NASA hood. Might have confused the point. Ray posted the Ford Facts Book yesterday that gives all the details or the options.

Some people go with shiny black but the whole idea is to kill the glare off the hood. You should not try to wax near the black or argent. Wax is way over rated anyway. A clean finish will last a long time.

I went glossy on mine for that very reason: so I can wax it without messing it up. Mine is originally a Ram Air car, so I put the TuTone back... just glossy this time.

Wax in West Texas is a big help. The sun tends to cook anything black, gray-scale, red, and/or metallic. Having a good UV-resistant wax on the car not only helps prolong the life of those colors, it also helps 'float' the dust away, sparing the finish from more micro-scratches. Which is huge because it's so dusty you can wash, wax, and literally within a few hours need to dust. Not to mention, helps in removing the dirt during the washing process - it literally doesn't stick nearly as much when the car is waxed.

I'm a believer.
