My 72 is an AC car and still has the compressor on it.  It appears to be missing the clutch and pulley as well as hoses.  Is there a thread\sticky with pics and instructions for how to replace\rebuild an AC system?

Thanks

Wade

I sent you an PM. I can send you some .pdf's of the Ford master catalog with the exploded views.

Here's one:

I tried doing a search for more, more came up I but am having problems with accessing them after searching.
Thanks Don!  I read through that whole thread and got a lot of good information.  One thing that jumped out at me was the replacement of the evaporator in the heater box.  I have the dash out now and replaced the heater core.  From what I am reading the evaporator needs to be changed too even if it is still good because I will have to use the new coolant.  Am  reading that correctly??

Yep got your PM last night and sent you a response.  Those files would be great!  Thank you!

Another question I have is how or can I test the current compressor?  Nothing is hooked up so is it possible?

Thanks!

Wade

Hello scgamecock,

You should be able to turn it over by hand and put your finger over either of the holes. It should either, create and hold suction or pressure until you take your finger off. Just make sure there’s a little bit of oil in it first. To turn it, just put a socket on the screw at the center of the clutch pulley.

To test the clutch, just apply 12V to the power wire and then try to loosen the screw while holding the pulley. You can use the belt for more leverage.

If you have the opportunity to rebuilt your heater/A/C condenser box, find a local Radiator shop. I carried mine to one to have it tested for leaks. It came back with a clean bill of Health!

scgamecock,

I recommend reaching out to Ohio Mustang Supply to see what he can do to help with your parts.

I might be totally wrong but I do not know why you would have to replace the evaporator or the condenser unless there is a hole or issue with it. I pressure checked mine in tank of water flushed it out, dried it and put back in with correct o-rings.

You should also pressure check the new heater core. When I did mine the NOS one had a leak down in the middle of it. I have had two over the years that were bad out of the box.

All of the pieces you need are out there seems most people pull them off instead of put them on.

As long as you use the correct o-rings for the new refrigerant and correct lube in the compressor along with having the system evacuated you should not have any problems.

I do think all the links to the Ford shop manuals are on the Forum just have to find them.

update:

looks like compressor is completely locked up.  I can't turn it at all.  I assume that is why the PO  removed the belt.

being a hard head, cheap, diyer is there a kit to rebuild these.  since I don't have any rush to get the AC working and like to tinker with things I have no problem pulling it apart but only if a rebuild is possible even if I need to adapt parts from LOWES  :D
