Sorry, if I am going to pay upwards of $80-90K for this car at auction, at least have the hood blackout done to factory specs...

Can of worms...

As many here know, I just went through the "ringer" on this black out issue with my restoration re: the ram air hood paint.

I commented on this particular car only because of the selling price and the fact that the blackout on that hood is too narrow from top to bottom. It is especially noticeable as the blackout reaches the start of the hood scoop area and then down through the curvature portion in front of the scoop. It then makes for the entire front curvature area to be much too narrow in comparison to factory. Appears to be at least 1" to narrow on each side.

I just feel bad for people that put out that kind of coin on what is really a nice car overall, but the blackout is so obvious to those in the know... It hurts to be told that the car you purchased, has obvious issues when it comes to the paint.

At the end of the day, not earth shattering, but this particular car is rare and the paint job deserved perfection when it was last sprayed.

That is where I am coming from in all of this.

This is my original blackout on my hood. It was never repainted although the blue on the hood had been done twice... Compare this with the hood on the green car...

BTW, if you look close at my hood, you will see that it was painted slightly off centre at the factory, I measure it at 3/8" difference on each side of the hood.

Even Ford couldn't get their black out correct. Solution.... No black out or Boss black out.. IMO it's much better looking than the ram air/mach 1 black out.

If you don't care about originality...

I personally have not seen a paint today that duplicates the factory black or argent. They are too smooth and are not true flat black. The pic. is my original 73 Mach 1. I would guess at the factory they used lacquer for the black and argent? I do not know that but you would think with them going down the line they would need to dry quick. Did they run the hoods back through the oven after the black was applied? I have two more hoods with original black out in storage. On my car they used the same black in the rear for the black adjacent to the tail lights and gas filler also around the front side marker lights, side marker light frames & on rear spoiler. The black on my 73 vert with decor group is same and also original. I guess the more you washed the car the smoother it got. The Mach 1 in pic hasn't been washed in 32 years, got to keep the original dirt, lol.
