One day as I drove through the town where I was, station I notes the big blue Ford sheal, so I drove into the fords lot when the salesman came up to me, I ask If I could order a 1972 Ford Mustang. This was Oct.1971. The salesman took me into his office then he called the Ford manufactory in Koblenz Germany and ask them if American Military person could order a 1972 Mustang Mach 1 through them. When he got off the phone, he informed me give him my duty phone # and he would call whenever he found out. 45Days later the salesman called and said yes, I could and for me to come by and place my order. When I placed the order, I told the salesman I wanted this mustang Powerful and when it hit the autobahn, I wanted all Germans to take notices. On 5 May 1972 I went to Koblenz Ford Factory to pick up my mustang. At the factory I was asked what type of oil I wanted to run in the motor for the engine had already been broke in on a dyno. I was given the papers from the dyno showing the motor put out 315 HP. I started asking question then. What type of engine this mustang has? He Said This car is not a mustang it's a T-5 Mach 1. The engine is a Ford Panterra HO 351C CJ 4V Q coded Ram Air
Factory 780 Holly carb with a Panterra C-6 auto trans and a 9-inch rear with 2:50 gears. on the odometer was only in metric 340 k's. The head lights were altogether different. When I ship it back to America when my tour was over, I had to replace the odometer to mph. the head lights had to be replaced to seal beans and the windshield had to be replace with safety glass. oh yes, the suspension system it came with was, The European Trans Am suspension which was Supered. While in Germany I ran 2 pounds of air in each tire the rest was Helium and no weights on the wheels, they were perfectly balance. Now you know the story behind This T-5. That is so cool. I wish I would have thought about ordering my 1972 Mach1 when I was in PACAF, but as a young Airman I wasn't thinking about the cars. I know exactly where you are. The store was a “must stop” for snacks and supplies before heading off on the trails. Thanks for the invite.Yes I live about 4 miles south of love valley, In fact it you can recall there is a service station on the left just prior to the turning off of 115 toward love valley.The Name of store Is Phils food mart. My home is maybe 500 ft.behind that store easy to get to.So the next time you are in the Statesville area and you have time, you are most welcome to stop and check out this T-5 first hand.
