My Car
1972 Mustang Grande
Ok this is my first post. I have a 72 grande coupe with mach 1 stripes and a mach 1 hood. Ok I would call myself an amateur when it comes to electrical. The previous owner told me the car needed a circuit board for the gauge lights. I have been driving the car with no instrument lights but it freaks out my wife for some reason. So I just now got around to replacing circuit board but still no gauge lights so I checked the fuse with test light and with lights off I get power to both sides of fuse but when lights on no power to one side. I am thinking my rheostat has gone out in my light switch. Just wanted to run everything by you guys first. What do yall think?

Light switches cause a fair number of these type problems-if it hasn't been changed, it is a relatively cheap part, a fairly simple install and necessary

Summit carries a headlight wiring harness that allows the headlights to pull power (through relays of course) directly through from the battery. It is about 35 bucks and will take a big load off the headlight switch.

It is also a simple install.

Just to add that RCCI offers a headlight relay system that uses existing connectors so that you don't have to modify your existing wiring.

ok thanks guys...I will get the headlight wiring kit and replace the headlight switch and see what happens. War Eagle

Ummm...something is definitely mis-wired. With lights off, you should not get power to either side of the fuse (short, 4 amp fuse). Power derives from the headlight switch, goes through the rheostat, then to the fuse box, and then out to the bulbs.

Replace the headlight switch. I had the same problem on my 70 and when I pulled it out it literally fell to pieces in my hand. $20 later is was fixed without issue.
