That's a good article. Just make sure the probes you use to pick up signals have the correct impedance to step down the high voltages used in ignition systems. Otherwise you risk damaging the 'scope.

GOOD advice, probably would have fried the scope.

My mechanic is a former Air Force electronics technician

so he may know what to do. I will query the manufacturer

about the proper probes.

A simple homemade inductive/capacitive probe is shown on page 5 of the article that Jeff referenced. You should be able to get something fairly low priced on Amazon or eBay. Be prepared to pay a lot from a manufacturer, like Tektronix.
